This is the Michigan Statewide Bird Report for Thursday, September 22nd,
2005. It is sponsored by the Audubon Society of Kalamazoo.
It is with great sadness that I report the untimely and unexpected death of
Jim Granlund, who passed away Tuesday evening. Jim was an important figure
among the Michigan birding community, contributing countless hours towards
seasonal surveys, Christmas Bird Counts, the Whitefish Point Bird
Observatory, Michigan Birds & Natural History, among several other
enterprises. Besides our enormous professional loss, have lost a great
friend. My thoughts are with Jim's wife, Cheryl, and their daughters, Hannah
and Laura. Information concerning donations made in Jim's name will appear
on next weeks Rare Bird Alert.
In WAYNE COUNTY, between 11:15am -11:45am, September 18th, at the Lake Erie
Metro Park Hawkwatch, an ANHINGA* was located, soaring quite high, above
BROAD-WINGED HAWK kettles. Later, observers relocated the bird at the Point
Mouilee State Game Area headquarters (WAYNE COUNTY). The bird was last seen
descending into the game units, in MONROE COUNTY, which are now closed due
to hunting. Equally as exciting this week was the discovery of a GULL-BILLED
TERN* on September 17th, and seen from the Point Mouilee State Game
Headquarters (WAYNE COUNTY). The bird has been relocated several times since
September 17th, and has been reported from both WAYNE and MONROE COUNTIES.
(The Point Mouilee Headquarters are located just inside WAYNE COUNTY, while
the hunting area, dikes, etc are located in MONROE COUNTY). Both the ANHINGA
and GULL-BILLED TERN are potential first state records for Michigan. On
September 19th, a record total of 8 SWAINSON'S HAWKS were reported by the
Southeast Michigan Raptor Reaserch hawkcounters, at Lake Erie Metropark.
In CHIPPEWA COUNTY, at the Whitefish Point Bird Observatory, a flyby PACIFIC
LOON* was reported on September 19th.
MARQUETTE COUNTY--SABINE’S GULLS have been turning up in good numbers in the
Great Lakes this month. Michigan (at least the Uppper Peninsula) is no
exception, as flyby SABINE’S GULLS were reported on September 18th at
Presque Isle Park at Marquette.
In BARAGA COUNTY, sometime within the last week, 2 BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS
were found along the Peshekee Grade.
In BAY COUNTY, at the Karn Plant in Bay City, the 2 previously reported
SNOWY EGRETS, as well as 1 CATTLE EGRET remained present through at least
September 20th.
In JACKSON COUNTY on September 18th, 4+ immature HENSLOW’S SPARROWS were
reported in the grassland planting, at the back of Haehnle Sanctuary.
In BERRIEN COUNTY on September 18th, 2 YELLOW-THROATED WARBLERS were seen on
their breeding grounds, along the Galien River near Three Oaks.
The next scheduled update of this report will be on Thursday, September
29th, 2005. To report your sightings, please leave a message at the sound of
the tone, or call Jon Wuepper at 269-556-9510. Thank you for calling and
good birding.
