EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS -
This is the Voice of Audubon for Friday, March 30.
Four SANDHILL CRANES were found this morning in a cornfield near the
intersection of West Meadow Road and Route 119 in Townsend, and a
CACKLING GOOSE was present in the same fields yesterday.
A TUNDRA SWAN was present Monday through Thursday in the wetland
beyond the cul-de-sac at Leo Way in East Bridgewater, but it has not
been
reported today.
The TOWNSEND'S WARBLER that over-wintered at 6 Laurel Street in
Cambridge was still there this morning, and a PACIFIC LOON was noted
today off Marblehead Neck, from the outer end of the causeway.
Recent reports from Nantucket have included 17 GADWALL, 6 PIED-BILLED
GREBES, 5 GREAT EGRETS, 6 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS, 14
OSPREYS, 30 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS, 9 PIPING PLOVERS, and
2 BARN SWALLOWS, and at the Cumberland Farm fields in Middleboro
there
were roughly 150 NORTHERN PINTAIL, 300 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 1
REDHEAD, 20 RING-NECKED DUCKS, 7 NORTHERN HARRIERS, 1
ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, 30 KILLDEER, 100 WILSON'S SNIPE, 10
AMERICAN WOODCOCK, and 1 NORTHERN SHRIKE.
Seen at Nine-Acre Corner in Concord were 2 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED
GEESE, 140 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 14 NORTHERN PINTAIL, 5
AMERICAN WIGEON, and 1 hybrid American x Eurasian Wigeon, and
miscellaneous reports this week have included a GREATER WHITE-FRONTED
GOOSE in the farm fields near the intersection of Barrett's Mill Road
and
Route 2 in West Concord, an OSPREY, 1 SHORT-EARED OWL, and 6 TREE
SWALLOWS at Plum Island, 2 GREATER YELLOWLEGS and 24 WILSON'S
SNIPE off Scotland Road in Newbury, 3 GREAT EGRETS and a BLACK
VULTURE in Gloucester, another or the same BLACK VULTURE in Rockport,
single OSPREYS in Weymouth, Concord, and Pepperell, a BALD EAGLE in
Rutland, a NORTHERN SHRIKE in Athol, 50 TREE SWALLOWS in Sudbury,
a VIRGINIA RAIL in Waltham, 170 RED-NECKED GREBES in Winthrop, a
GREAT EGRET and a GREATER YELLOWLEGS in Quincy, a GREAT EGRET
in Duxbury, a PINE WARBLER in Walpole, an AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER
in Mashpee, and a BLACK VULTURE in Mattapoisett.
