This is the Santa Barbara Audubon Society's rare bird report being recorded
on Friday, March 30 at 1:00 p.m. If you have a rare bird sighting to report,
call Karen Bridgers at 964-1316. For those of you who are getting the
transcript on the Internet, the rare bird alert number for Santa Barbara is
(805) 964-8240.

The wintering PAINTED REDSTART on the UCSB campus was still present on March
21. Park in the Mesa parking structure and walk south, past Campbell Hall,
to the Chemistry building. The bird has been south of the Chemistry building
in a large fig tree, or in the open area around the Eternal Flame.

On the UCSB campus, three SURFBIRDS were seen on the rocks below Campus
Point on the 24th. This is a good spot from which to observe the spring
seabird migration, and on Wednesday evening, an ANCIENT MURRELET flew by a
few hundred yards offshore.

Near UCSB, in the wetland area at the intersection of Los Carneros and Mesa,
a pair of BLUE-WINGED TEAL remained on the 25th.

On Atascadero Creek, about 30 yards east of the wooden bike bridge off south
Patterson Avenue, a singing "SOLITARY VIREO" was seen briefly this morning.
The bird disappeared before it could be fully identified.

At Bohnett Park in Santa Barbara, the HAMMOND'S FLYCATCHER was still present
on the 26th. Park on San Andreas Street, then walk down the stairs and
straight ahead. The bird was at the end of the path, on the left side.

Two ROSS'S GEESE remain in the pond at the Rancho Goleta Mobile Home Park at
the end of Ward Drive in Goleta.

More than 25 SURFBIRDS were reported from the overlook to the Harbor Seal
Rookery in Carpinteria this week.

On Kinevan Road, off Highway 154, a VARIED THRUSH was seen yesterday.

Birding in Lion Canyon along the Sierra Madre Ridge in northeast Santa
Barbara County last weekend produced two MOUNTAIN CHICKADEES, a GRASSHOPPER
SPARROW, and a GOLDEN EAGLE.

In the North County, at Waller Park in Santa Maria, both the CACKLING GOOSE
and the ROSS'S GOOSE remain in the front pond.

The wintering EASTERN PHOEBE remained in the Park at River Oaks in Santa
Maria on the 27th.

A GRASSHOPPER SPARROW was reported from Miguelito Canyon Road in Lompoc this
morning, at the 7 mile marker.

The wintering WHITE-THROATED SPARROW was still in the southeast corner of
Old LaPurisima Mission Park, in the blackberry bushes, yesterday. The park
is on the south side of Lompoc.

That is all the bird news for now, but, again, if you have a rare sighting
to report, call Karen Bridgers at 964-1316. Good birding in Santa Barbara
County.
