Of Special Note
Notable birds included a BLACK VULTURE in Wells and GREATER
WHITE-FRONTED GEESE in Machias.
First of the year reports this week included PIPING PLOVER, BELTED
KINGFISHER, TREE SWALLOWS, BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, and GREATER YELLOW-LEGS.
Waterfowl migration was well underway in southern and coastal areas with
WOOD DUCK. GREEN-WINGED TEAL, AMERICAN WIGEON, and RING-NECKED DUCKS
among those reported.
AMERICAN WOODCOCK returned to fields in most areas of the State.
York County
A PEREGRINE FALCON perched on the southbound side of the I-95 bridge in
Kittery.
In Berwick, a NORTHERN FLICKER was seen on March 24, and an AMERICAN
WOODCOCK returned on March 23.
In Cape Neddick on March 27 there were AMERICAN WOODCOCK and a HOUSE
WREN.
In Wells, a BLACK VULTURE report soared over I-95 on March 27, while a
GREAT EGRET and GREAT BLUE HERONS were seen at Wells Harbor and Granite
Point.
Twenty HARLEQUIN DUCKS continue at the Cliff House in Wells.
An AMERICAN KESTREL was hunting the Kennebunk Plains from the wires on
Route 109 in Kennebunk on March 25. An AMERICAN KESTREL and AMERICAN
WOODCOCK were in West Kennebunk. A male BELTED KINGFISHER was seen by
the Mousam River near Parson's Beach in Kennebunk.
Two PIPING PLOVERS returned to Goose Rocks Beach in Kennebunkport on
March 26.
In Biddeford Pool, area birds included: a RED-NECKED GREBE, 18 BRANT, 30
DUNLIN, 40 PURPLE SANDPIPERS, 3 SANDERLINGS, a KILLDEER, and 2 GREAT
BLUE HERONS. In Biddeford, a BARROW'S GOLDENEYE remains in the Saco
River and an AMERICAN KESTREL was seen from I-95.
In Saco, birds seen from the Boom Road included 2 AMERICAN KESTREL, WOOD
DUCKS, and GREEN-WINGED TEAL. A RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER continues at
Laurel Hill Cemetery. A PIPING PLOVER, 5 HORNED LARKS, and a
YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER were seen at Goosefare Brook in Saco on March 24.
A pair of WOOD DUCK and a pair of RING-NECKED DUCKS were in the Saco
River in Bar Mills on March 25.
An EASTERN PHOEBE was singing in Hollis on March 28.
A RUSTY BLACKBIRD and 2 BROWN-HEADED COWBIRDS were at Fryeburg Harbor on
March 23, and a KILLDEER was in an icy field in North Fryeburg.
Elsewhere in Fryeburg, 2 KILLDEER, 20 WOOD DUCKS, 8 GREEN-WINGED TEAL,
and 2 NORTHERN PINTAIL were in the fields along Rt. 113 north of the
Saco River.
Scarborough Marsh Area
Nineteen SNOW GEESE seen from Eastern Road highlighted the list of
Scarborough Marsh birds this week. A dozen TREE SWALLOWS and 2 NORTHERN
HARRIERS were also seen where Eastern road crosses the marsh.
Birds seen from Dunstan Landing included 2 GREAT EGRETS, a GREAT BLUE
HERON, 2 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, EASTERN PHOEBE, BELTED KINGFISHER, and a
RINGED-NECKED DUCK.
At Pelreco this week there were a NORTHERN HARRIER, at least 20
GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 2 GREAT BLUE HERON, a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, and many
migrating TURKEY VULTURES.
Elsewhere in Scarborough, an EASTERN MEADOWLARK, an EASTERN PHOEBE, and
2 KILLDEER along with 9 migrating hawks were seen at Fuller Farm on
March 26.
Greater Portland
Ten SNOW BUNTINGS and an AMERICAN WOODCOCK were at Spring Point in South
Portland on March 25.
In Portland, 9 WOOD DUCKS were at Maine Audubon's Fore River Sanctuary
on March 23. Capisic Pond began to open with 14 HOODED MERGANSERS and a
RING-NECKED DUCK reported on March 26. Birds at Evergreen Cemetery
included a COOPER'S HAWK, a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, an AMERICAN
WOODCOCK, and 2 PILEATED WOODPECKERS.
The ICELAND GULL frequently being reported from the end of Union Wharf
in Portland continued on March 24.
A COOPER'S HAWK was seen flying near I-95 runs along the Presumpscot in
Falmouth. At Maine Audubon's Gilsland Farm there were an AMERICAN
KESTREL, EASTERN PHOEBE, and an AMERICAN WOODCOCK.
At the Recycling Facility in Cumberland on March 24 there were two TREE
SWALLOWS.
WOOD DUCKS were on the Royal River in Yarmouth on March 25.
In Freeport, the Bradbury Mountain hawk watch tallied 125 raptors of 10
species on March 23 through March 28 with 34 TURKEY VULTURES, 12 BALD
EAGLES, 1 NORTHERN HARRIER, 3 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 5 COOPER'S HAWKS, 3
NORTHERN GOSHAWKS, 4 RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS, 58 RED-TAILED HAWKS, 2
AMERICAN KESTREL, 2 MERLIN, and 1 unidentified raptor.
A pair of AMERICAN WIGEONS continues in Collins Pond in Windham.
AMERICAN WOODCOCK returned to Raymond on March 26.
Midcoast
Reports from Richmond included nesting BALD EAGLES, a NORTHERN HARRIER,
3 male WOOD DUCKS in the marsh just west of Richmond Corner along Rt.
197, AMERICAN WOODCOCK at Stiphinin Point, and a BROWN CREEPER at
Center Point,
Eight AMERICAN WIGEON, 20 COMMON MERGANSER, and 5 HOODED MERGANSERS were
in Pleasant Cove in Woolwich on March 27.
An immature NORTHERN SHRIKE continues to visit a yard in Georgetown.
AMERICAN WOODCOCK were reported in Camden on March 27.
Two BROAD-WINGED HAWKS were seen near Southern Harbor in North Haven on
March 24, while 2 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS were over North Shore Road on March
25.
Lewiston-Auburn
A pair of PEREGRINE FALCONS continues to be reported at the
Franco-American Heritage Center in Lewiston.
Kennebec Valley
An AMERICAN KESTREL perched on a wire at the intersection of Rt. 9/126
and I-295 in Gardiner while 8 male RING-NECKED DUCKS were on
Cobbosseeconte Stream as viewed from Old Lewiston Road in West Gardiner.
A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was seen atop a lone tree in a field on the east
side of Small Road in Litchfield on March 27.
In Hallowell, 8-10 TREE SWALLOWS flew over the frozen Kennebec River on
March 28.
Two TURKEY VULTURES were seen in Wilton.
A male AMERICAN WIGEON was seen dabbling in Messalonskee Stream in
Waterville on March 25.
Ten EVENING GROSBEAKS visited feeders in New Sharon on March 27.
An AMERICAN KESTREL was bobbing on the wire in Sidney on March 28.
Central Maine
The SNOWY OWL in Corinna at the Veazieland Farm was still present as of
March 25.
A COOPER'S HAWK and an AMERICAN KESTREL were in Dixmont on March 23.
Twenty BARROW'S GOLDENEYES and several RING-NECKED DUCKS were seen on
the Bangor waterfront on March 23. Two BROAD-WINGED HAWKS were seen
over Union Street on March 24 and a KILLDEER spotted on March 26.
In Orrington Marsh, viewed from the Brewer Lake Road, were a pair of
BALD EAGLES and 11 species of ducks, including HOODED and COMMON
MERGANSER, NORTHERN PINTAIL, GREEN-WINGED TEAL, AMERICAN WIGEON, WOOD
DUCK, RING-NECKED DUCK, and BUFFLEHEAD.
A RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was over Caribou Bog in Old Town on March 25 and
at least 7 BALD EAGLES were seen at Mud Pond near Pushaw Lake.
Penobscot Bay
Four EASTERN MEADOWLARK were in a field between Rt. 90 and Cross Street
in Rockport on March 29.
A RUSTY BLACKBIRD was in Searsport on March 26.
A WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL pair fledged young in Brooklin.
An AMERICAN WOODCOCK was flushed out in Town Hill on Mt. Desert on March
25.
Birds seen from the Maine State Ferry out of Bass Harbor to Swans Island
and Frenchboro included BALD EAGLES on Harbor Island, PURPLE SANDPIPERS
on Crow Island Ledge, many BLACK GUILLEMOTS molting into summer plumage,
RED-NECKED GREBES, and GREAT CORMORANTS.
Downeast Coast
In Machias on March 27, 6 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were reported in a
fly over on March 27, but not re-located. Other reports from Machias
included 4 KILLDEER along the Machias River on March 23, an AMERICAN
WOODCOCK on March 24, and a NORTHERN SHRIKE on the East Kennebec Road in
Machias on March 25.
A pair of WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS and 2 immature BALD EAGLES was in
Great Cove in Roque Bluffs.
Washington County
Birds at Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge this past week included
AMERICAN KESTREL, AMERICAN WOODCOCK, and HOODED MERGANSERS.
Western Maine
Two EVENING GROSBEAKS visited feeders in Mason TWP on March 25.
Aroostook County
COMMON GRACKLES and RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS have returned to Houlton.
