Red-headed Woodpecker

In the past week, a number of migrants continue to appear throughout the
area. Species being widely reported include NORTHERN GANNET,
DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT, GREAT EGRET, TURKEY VULTURE, OSPREY (many
sitting on nest sites), EASTERN PHOEBE, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, FISH
CROW, and FOX SPARROW. New arrivals this week include TREE SWALLOW and
RUSTY BLACKBIRD.

A TURKEY VULTURE was at Teddy Roosevelt County Park in Montauk on Mar 26
(BH), while four were spotted over Oyster Pond on Mar 28 (VB).

An immature BALD EAGLE and 3 TURKEY VULTURES were spotted soaring over
the Napeague stretch on Mar 27 (SB). Another TURKEY VULTURE was spotted
over Amagansett on Mar 29 (VB).

In Fireplace, the three HARLEQUIN DUCKS were spotted again on Mar 24, 25
and 27. These birds can be seen in Gardiner's Bay at the end of
Springs-Fireplace Rd in East Hampton (Springs). At times the birds
disappear, but they seem to habitually return to this spot.

The RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was still present on Mar 24. To find this bird
drive to the south end of Timber Lane, follow the dirt trail south to
the orange blazed trail. Turn right and continue to the second house.
Look for the woodpecker at the place where the trail forms a T with a
branch that goes to the right.

A large dark raptor spotted between the East Hampton High School and Rt
114 on Mar 28 may have been a sub-adult Golden Eagle.

An adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen in Sammy's Creek (at Mecox
Bay) from Jobs Lane on Mar 25 (PSh). A large number of BONAPARTE'S GULLS
continue on the mud flats at the cut, with a max of 415 on Mar 28 (HM).
A BLACK-HEADED GULL was found amongst them on Mar 25 (JGl). An adult
GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE (with a noticeably pink in comparison to the
legs) was on the lawn at the spirituality center in Watermill on Mar 24,
while 27 NORTHERN SHOVELERS were in the adjacent creek (HM).

At Shinnecock inlet, there were 20 COMMON EIDERS on the bay side on Mar
25 (JGl). Along Dune Rd in Quogue there was a lone AMERICAN BITTERN on
Mar 28 (PG)

At least 5 AMERICAN WOODCOCKS were displaying at the former Grumman
property in Calverton at the corner of Line and River Roads on Mar 25
(JGl).

Mashomack produced two year birds, 7 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS and a TREE SWALLOW
on Mar 26, as well as 5 WINTER WRENS, 3 EASTERN BLUEBIRDS and a FOX
SPARROWS (NH).

A BARN OWL was spotted in Baiting Hollow on Mar 24 (BL). This is our

TREE SWALLOWS on Mar 17 (RMcG).

Biasetti, Vicki Bustamante, Jen Clement (JCl), Monique Enders, Paul
Gillen, John Gluth (JGl), Roger Grunewald, Nick Hamblet, Bruce Horwith,
