This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Friday, March 30,

A warm week and south winds brought migrants to all counties. Most
species of geese and ducks were mentioned in the reports and there were
frequent mentions of raptors such as BALD EAGLE, NORTHERN HARRIER,
RED-TAILED HAWK, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, and AMERICAN KESTREL. KILLDEER and
AMERICAN WOODCOCK represented the shorebirds; and there were reports of
AMERICAN ROBINS, EASTERN BLUEBIRDS, WESTERN MEADOWLARKS, and RED-WINGED
BLACKBIRDS in many reports.
Ben Wieland reported a BARROW'S GOLDENEYE at Kabekona Narrows on Leech
Lake in Cass County on March 26. This location is 3 miles north from
Walker on MN 371 , turning right after the bridge to the boat launch
area. Pat Rice was there on March 28 was unable to find the bird so it
may have left. At Agassiz NWR on March 23, Kelly Larson saw a PRAIRIE
FALCON. Shelley Steva found a MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD in Pennington County on
March 23 along CR 17 one mile north of the Red Lake County line. Earl
Orf relocated the EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE in Otter Tail County on March
22 in Pelican Rapids on CR 30 across from Soberg Construction.
From Kittson County, Larry Wilebski reported TRUMPETER SWAN, SNOW GOOSE,
MALLARD, COOPER'S HAWK, SANDHILL CRANES, KILLDEER, and AMERICAN TREE
SPARROW on the weekend.
Lyle and Sally Lauber at Dixon Lake in Itasca County reported that on
March 29, there were many migrating TUNDRA SWANS and SANDHILL CRANES,
and numbers of PURPLE FINCHES are building.
Beltrami County birds seen this week included WOOD DUCK, GREATER SCAUP,
LESSER SCAUP, HOODED MERGANSER, PIED-BILLED GREBE, AMERICAN KESTREL,
MERLIN, and RING-BILLED GULL reported by Kelly Larson and Pat Rice in
the Bemidji area.
In Clearwater County, Kelly Larson discovered AMERICAN WOODCOCK,
DARK-EYED JUNCO, and PURPLE FINCH on March 25.
While in Cass County on March 26, Pat Rice saw KILLDEER, and a HERRING
GULL. 30 BALD EAGLES were seen in Beltrami, Cass, and Itasca Counties,
so they were definitely on the move.
BALD EAGLES were spotted separately by two observers, Sue Helm and Mary
Broten, a few miles south of Newfolden along US 59 in Marshall County on
March 23. Mary also reported SANDHILL CRANES in Marshall County that
day. Kelly Larson reported many species of ducks at Agassiz NWR. Gary
Tischer called to report that the BALD EAGLES are building a second nest
in the Parker Pool area near where they have nested for several years.
Many species of ducks are back, and open water area is increasing daily.
In Pennington County, two TURKEY VULTURES were seen on March 27, soaring
over the turkey processing plant on Pennington Avenue in Thief River
Falls. Shelley Steva reported the first COMMON GRACKLE in Pennington
County on March 25, RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD, and WESTERN MEADOWLARKS on
March 26.
Shelley observed an AMERICAN KESTREL in Red Lake County on March 23. A
nesting GREAT HORNED OWL was found along US 59 in Red Lake County south
of Plummer on March 24.
In western Polk County I heard many SANDHILL CRANES in the fog near Melo
Church on March 25. Donna and Leon Thoreson reported that they now have
35 HORNED LARKS at their place near Climax. 20 BALD EAGLES were seen
near the Red River on March 28.
In Mahnomen County, Ben Fritchman heard 8 GREAT HORNED OWLS, 1 NORTHERN
SAW-WHET OWL and one LONG-EARED OWL on the early morning of March 24.
From Becker County, Dave Hochhalter reported AMERICAN ROBIN and NORTHERN
CARDINAL on March 21.
Ben Fritchman reported TUNDRA SWAN, GADWALL, AMERICAN WIGEON, RUDDY
DUCK, RING-BILLED GULL, and other migrants on March 24 in Clay County.
At Buffalo River State Park, Mel and Elaine Bennefeld reported SANDHILL
CRANE, AMERICAN WOODCOCK, COMMON RAVEN, EASTERN BLUEBIRD and others on
March 27.
From Otter Tail County, Tom and Sheryl Smith reported GREATER
WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE, CACKLING GOOSE, SNOW GOOSE, TUNDRA SWAN, many
species of ducks, RING-BILLED GULL, LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE, AMERICAN TREE
SPARROW, BREWER'S BLACKBIRD, and WESTERN MEADOWLARK on March 25. Jeff
and Amy Drake added GREAT BLUE HERON, and TREE SWALLOW among others. Dan
and Sandy Thimgan reported that at Glendalough SP they saw 15 species of
ducks on the weekend. Also included were PIED-BILLED GREBE, AMERICAN
COOT, and a NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL on March 25. A FOX SPARROW showed up
at their home on March 29. Alma Ronningen reported a SONG SPARROW on
March 28.
Finally , in Douglas County, Susan Wiste reported a SHARP-SHINNED HAWK
on March 21.
