This is Pinyon Jay with the New Mexico Bird Report for September 22, 2005,

In Mora County:
JO reported four SABINE'S GULLS on Cherry Valley Lake east of Watrous on
September 18.
In San Miguel County:
JO, MB, and NP on September 18 had a first winter LITTLE GULL and a
SABINE'S GULL on Conchas Lake. The Little was north and west of Big Mesa. JO, JP,
PM, and RV saw both gulls again September 19 with five COMMON TERNS. JO on
September 19 also saw five VERMILION FLYCATCHERS, two EASTERN PHOEBES, a
SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER, and an immature LITTLE BLUE HERON there. JB and BW on
September 20 saw the Little Gull, a first winter CALIFORNIA GULL, and two
immature Sabine's Gulls. SNC found the Little and two Sabine's Gulls on September
21.
JB on the 20th saw an adult male SCARLET TANAGER in breeding plumage at
the pump house next to the golf course.
BW on September 20 had three ACORN WOODPECKERS on the road along Sapello
Creek west of San Ignacio. The site is 12 miles west of Sapello which is on
NM 518 north of Las Vegas.
In Colfax County:
On September 14 at Stubblefield Lake DC had a light phase immature
LONG-TAILED JAEGER. JO on September 15 saw the jaeger. MB, NP, and JB saw it
September 15; RV, CR, and BN had the jaeger on September 17 with an immature and
two adult Sabine's Gulls and 60 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES. DC at the lake on
September 20 missed the jaeger, but saw 110 WHITE PELICANS, a GREAT EGRET, 11
immature SABINE;S GULLS, with eight CHESTNUT-COLLARED LONGSPURS on the north shore.
On Lake 13 of the adjacent Maxwell Refuge JO on the 15th saw a
richardsonii MERLIN at Lake 14. RV, CR, and BN saw seven LONG-EARD OWLS and seven
BARN
OWLS on Ridge Road off of the Laguna Madre Road on the refuge September 17.
In Union County:
JO on September 15 at Clayton Lake saw a NEOTROPIC CORMORANT and EASTERN
PHOEBE. At Seneca he found two VERMILION FLYCATCHERS.
In Quay County:
DC on September 16 at Ute Lake had three COMMON TERNS and several BLUE
JAYS at the lake and in Logan. JO had the three terns on the lake September 19.
JO at a playa two miles west of Forrest on NM 241 had 13 RED-NECKED
PHALAROPES.
In Cibola County:
CJG at El Morro Monument had on September 10 a SAVANNAH SPARROW. On
September 14 SB had a ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK at the El Morro visitor center in
currant bushes.
In Bernalillo County:
NC reported they banded a BLUE-HEADED VIREO on September 18 at the Rio Grande
Nature Center in Albuquerque. DP saw two NASHVILLE WARBLERS there on
September 19.
BV on September 18 at the ponds at Tramway and Fourth in Albuquerque had
one PECTORAL SANDPIPER and a SEMIPALMATED PLOVER.
BV also had a female ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK at the Isleta Lakes on the
west side of the largest lake on September 18.
In DeBaca County:
At the Bosque Redondo Park near Fort Sumner BW reports that much of the
understory brush has been removed, so few birds.
On September 13 WW at Sumner Lake had an OSPREY. On September 21 he saw
an immature SABINE'S GULL at the lake's boat launch area.
In Roosevelt County:
At the migrant trap 11 mile west of Melrose on September 15 DC reported
one GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER and a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER with two immature
PAINTED BUNTINGS. JB on September 18 with JO, JP, WW, and LL had an AMERICAN
REDSTART. Later with JNM and AF there was an adult Western PALM WARBLER. JO on
September 19 saw a probable ACADIAN FLYCATCHER and on September 21 he saw a
female-plumaged BLACKPOLL WARBLER, a HEPATIC TANAGER, two DICKCISSELS, NASHVILLE
WARBLER, CASSIN'S VIREO and several SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHERS. WW had an
immature female MOURNING WARBLER on the 21st and SNC saw the EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE
and a crested flycatcher.
In Curry County:
JO on September 19 had a GREAT EGRET and three EGYPTIAN GEESE in Green
Acres Park in Clovis. At the Rajen Cattle Sewage Ponds near Cannon Air Force
Base there was a RED-NECKED PHALAROPE and a WILLET.
In Socorro County:
On Bosque del Apache Refuge near San Antonio CL on September 18 saw a
RED-NECKED PHALAROPE.
In Chaves County:
JHo on September 14 had a good migration at Bitter Lake Refuge headquarters
with two DICKCISSELS, a PAINTED BUNTING, and a RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH.
JO on September 13 had a COMMON BLACK-HAWK about ten miles east of Elk a
half mile west of the junction of US83 and NM24.
In Sierra County:
At Percha State Park on September 14 JO saw a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER. The
same day CL and DSP saw the adult woodpecker, two PEREGRINES and a PAINTED
REDSTART. On September 18 CL found a BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, two NASHVILLE
WARBLERS, a CASSIN'S VIREO, and a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW.
On South Monticello Point of Elephant Butte Lake on September 18 CL had
an OSPREY and 200 WHITE PELICANS. JO on September 21 saw three PECTORAL
SANDPIPERS.
In Grant County:
DB had a GOSHAWK in a pine near the Little Walnut Picnic Area in Silver
City on September 7.
In Hidalgo County:
DB on September 4 had a GRAY HAWK south of Animas on county 1 at the
Dunagan Crossing (where one had been several years ago).
In Luna County:
LM on September 14 had at his Deming yard a COMMON GROUND-DOVE. At the
sewage plant there he found five WHITE-FRONTED GEESE September 1.
In Doņa Ana County:
MS reported a DICKCISSEL in their yard near Radium Springs on September
10. They had a first fall BLACKPOLL WARBLER briefly in the yard September 16,
with Dickcissels still present.
In Otero County:
At the Holloman Lakes near Alamogordo CL reports that the 'no access'
signs are for hunters only. The entire shore is open to birding. He had over 30
RED-NECKED PHALAROPES there September 16. On September 21 JZ and MS saw a
female NORTHERN PARULA with six other warbler species, three PECTORAL
SANDPIPERS, and one of the phalaropes with Wilson's; and CL had a MARBLED GODWIT,
VIRGINIA'S WARBLER, and LINCOLN'S SPARROW.
In Eddy County:
At Rattlesnake Springs on September 11 DG saw a CATBIRD with a NORTHERN
WATERTHRUSH, and a MISSISSIPPI KITE September 12. On September 17 SW saw the
catbird, a LONG-BILLED CURLEW, UPLAND SANDPIPER, YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, and
ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK.
In Lea County:
WW re-found the immature YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON at the Tatum Sewage
Ponds on September 20. It must also be found somewhere else in the area.

On Saturday, September 24, Dave Cleary will lead a trip on the Maxwell Refuge

along the Cimarron River near the Gravel Pit Lakes. No charge. Contact him at

On the weekend of September 24-25 Mesilla Valley explores the area of Bitter
Lake Refuge with Bottomless Lakes and the Dexter Fish Hatchery near Roswell.

The weekend of October 1-2 Central will go to the Clabber Hill Ranch near
Conchas Lake, visiting Sumner Lake, the Melrose trap, and Bosque Redondo Park on
the way. The return may be via the Las Vegas Refuge. Leader is Celestyn
Brozek at 925-8611.
On Saturday, October 1, Southwestern Audubon will lead a Kids' Walk led by
Tricia Hurley at the Gila Cliff Dwellings, contact 534-0879. The adults will
hike along the West Fork of the Gila from the cliff dwellings led by David
Beatty. Call the monument at 536-9461.
On Sunday, October 2 Sangre de Cristo will take the rocky, steep climb in the
Manzanos to the Hawk Watch site, a one mile hike. Leaders are Lonnie Howard
at 995-9799 or Gail Szapatura, 471-4496.
The Sevilleta Refuge Open House will be October 15-16. Hart Schwarz will
lead a trip into Pinyon Canyon of the Los Pinos Mts. on Saturday. More details

The feeders at Sandia Crest will go up on October 26.
