This is a summary of reports from the Northwestern
California Bird Alert , sponsored by the City of Arcata, Redwood
Region
Audubon Society, and generous support from local birders. Most
birds reported are in Humboldt County unless otherwise noted.
Birds in caps under the "birds mentioned" section have less than 50
(plus
or minus 5) records of occurrence in Northwestern California as
defined in Stan Harris's " Northwestern California Birds" (3rd
edition, 2005). California Bird Records Committee review species
are noted with an asterisk (*). Send reports of California Bird

A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was found at Mad River County Park. The bird was
along the north end of the trail that runs between the dunes and willows
that begins just north from the parking lot at the end of Mad River Road
(Jherimie Kellerman).

A SNOWY OWL* was found on the South Spit (Carol Wilson fide Kerry Ross) .
This is the first SNOWY OWL in Humboldt County since 1978. The bird was
later seen from a very far distance and was in the vicinity of the
northernmost hunters access point on the bay side (Matt Wachs). The bird was
last seen at 7:30 p.m. and was still in the northern portion of the spit on
the bay side (Scott Carey et al.)
27 Mar.

The SNOWY OWL continued on the South Spit. The bird was seen in the morning
on the west side of the road 1.2 miles north of the "narrows" (Pablo
Herrera, John Pelafigue, Jherimie Kellerman). Later in the day the owl was
seen in the same vicinity (Owen Head) but was also seen near the last hunter
access point on the bay side late in the day (Daryl Coldren, Chet Ogan).
DEL NORTE COUNTY had it's second record of LAUGHING GULL, found in a large
gull flock just north of the Alexandre Dairy on Lower Lake Road (Alan
Barron).
28 Mar.

Around 8:00 am the SNOWY OWL* was still present on the South Spit of
Humboldt Bay. The bird was seen about 1/2 mile south of the restroom at the
north end of the spit (Brian Acord). The owl was also seen later on the
beach, in the Snowy Plover restoration area (Ron LeValley), and from about
100 meters to about a 1/2 mile south of the bathrooms at the north end of
the spit (no name, Gary Falxa).
In Arcata, the wintering HARRIS'S SPARROW was still coming to a feeder at
1087 12th Street (Scott Carey).
Another raptor of interest, the CRESTED CARACARA*, was still present off of
Meridian Way in Ferndale. A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was seen on Bear River Ridge
(Owen Head).
29 Mar.

The SNOWY OWL* was still present on the South Spit. Note a message to the
birdbox and NWCALBIRD from Paul Roush in regards to the importance of
staying out of the Snowy Plover restoration area. See the message to

At 9:00 am the SNOWY OWL was about 1 mile south of the South Jetty (Rich
Ridenhour).
30 Mar.
------------
The SNOWY OWL* continued on the South Spit and was seen about 1/2 mile south
of the bathroom at the north end. There were also 2 RED-NECKED GREBES on the
bay that were in breeding plumage (Rob Santry).
Later in the day the SNOWY OWL was seen on the beach side of the spit, about
3/4 mile south of the bathroom (Bill Rodstrom).
A pair of COOPER'S HAWKS and 1 single were seen in the Shively area, south
of Scotia. NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS returned to the Eel River (Tom
Leskiw, Lauren Thompkins).
31 Mar.
------------
The SNOWY OWL* was still present at around 9:00 am; it was along the ridge
of the eastern border of the Snowy Plover restoration area (John Pelafigue).
The bird was also seen on the west side of the road, 1.9 miles north of the
"narrows" (Paul Roush).
In DEL NORTE COUNTY the LAUGHING GULL was still present in the
aforementioned location (Alan Barron).
DEL NORTE COUNTY'S third record of SLATY-BACKED GULL* (2nd cycle) was found
in the gull flock that has been present just north of Alexandre Dairy. The
LAUGHING GULL and 5 1st winter GLAUCOUS GULLS were also present (Keith
Slauson, Ken Burton, Pablo Herrera).
1 Apr.
----------
The SLATY-BACKED* and LAUGHING GULLS were still present at the
aforementioned location in DEL NORTE COUNTY (Alan Barron).
The SNOWY OWL* was seen on the east side of the south spit, opposite of the
1st small cypress tree and was not visible from the road (Chet Ogan).
A EURASIAN COLLARED DOVE was seen in a yard in the town of Miranda (David
Gurley).
The SLATY-BACKED* , LAUGHING, and 4 GLAUCOUS GULLS were seen at the mouth of
the Smith River; no gulls were present in the fields around Alexandre Dairy
(Gary Lester).
2 Apr.
----------
The SLATY-BACKED* and LAUGHING GULL was still present in the Alexandre Dairy
vicinity in DEL NORTE COUNTY (Alan Barron). It was also seen later in the
day at the Smith River mouth.
Two negative reports came in from people that spent the whole morning
looking for the SNOWY OWL on the South Spit (Louise Bacon-Ogden, John
Pelafigue).
