Cold, snowy weather has resulted in concentrations of various species of songbirds and other species of birds within the city of Calgary this week. Jim Davis observed 22 MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRDS in the Burnsmead area of east Fish Creek PP around 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 4, with 20 of the birds along the Bow River shoreline within 100 metres of the pedestrian bridge there. The same day in North Glenmore Park, Jay Willis reported more MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRDS in the scrubby aspen growth between the Rowing Club and the point. Several flocks of AMERICAN ROBINS were seen this week with Terry Korolyk observing 120 - 130 birds in a residential area just south of the Parkland Community Hall in the Parkland subdivision in SE Calgary on the morning of Tuesday, Apr 3. Terry observed 7 KILLDEER on the rocky point north of the Hwy 22X Bridge in east Fish Creek PP the same morning.
There were 2 VARIED THRUSHES reported in the Okotoks area this week. Wendy Adam, who lives on a ranch south of Okotoks, has had a VARIED THRUSH in her yard from April 2 - April 5, while Linda Blasetti had a VARIED THRUSH in her yard in Okotoks on Wednesday, April 4.
Mike Heigl reported 2 THAYER'S GULLS at the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary in Calgary earlier this week, while Jim Davis reported a pair of EURASIAN WIGEON on the Bow River near the bridge at Fish Creek Burnsmead on Wednesday, April 4.
Observers in and around east Fish Creek PP can be on the lookout for TURKEYS. There have been several reports recently. The only known established flocks of WILD TURKEYS have been in the Porcupine Hills and the Cypress Hills. There have been some reports in recent years from the foothills north of the Porcupine Hills.
The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is Monday, April 9.
