This is the Thursday, April 05, 2007 Missouri Rare
Bird Alert, a statewide service of the Audubon Society
of Missouri, serving the birding community of Missouri
since 1901. The bird alert is compiled from reports
submitted by ASM members and other birders throughout
the state.
** NOTE: The report includes birds that are listed as
rare, casual, or accidental on the 2003 Annotated
Checklist of Missouri Birds (with revisions in 2004
and 2005). Species that appear in ALL CAPS in the
“Species Mentioned” section are listed as “casual” or
“accidental” and thus require documentation. (Note
that some birds may be considered rare only during a
particular season or in a particular part of the

ST. LOUIS AREA
On Saturday, March 31, Charlene Malone found 3
WHIMBRELS in Ellis Bay at Riverlands MBS (St. Charles
Co.). These birds were kind enough to stay into
Sunday, April 1, when many observers were able to see
them feeding on the Lincoln Shields side of Riverlands
MBS.
COLUMBIA/CENTRAL
On Monday, April 2, Bill Goodge found a BLACK-NECKED
STILT at Eagle Bluffs CA (Boone Co.). The bird was
observed by walking out the gated levee across the
distribution channel. The bird was feeding in a
shallow marshy area on the upper side of the levee.
On Thursday, April 5, Jennifer Hamel reported that a
male CINNAMON TEAL was present at Eagle Bluffs CA.
This bird was observed in the distribution channel,
swimming with Blue-winged Teal, in line with the
“cormorant trees.”
NORTHWEST
Steve Kinder reported on Monday, April 2, that it
appears to be about peak for hen GREATER PRAIRIE
CHICKENS coming to the lek at the Nature Conservancy’s
Dunn Ranch (Harrison Co.). 13 female and 16 male
GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKENS were observed on Sunday,
April 1, while 11 females and 17 males were observed
on Monday, April 2. Birders interested in viewing
these birds need to contact Doug at 314.968.1105 or
call the St. Joseph MDC office at 816.271.3107 to make
arrangements.
At Squaw Creek NWR (Holt Co.) on Tuesday, April 3,
Larry Lade observed a single EARED GREBE at the south
end of Eagle Pool 1. Larry also heard 1, possibly 2,
SANDHILL CRANE calling from the interior of the
western side of the refuge.
SOUTHEAST
At the home of Wes and Claudia Mueller, Cape
Girardeau, an immature RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD continues
visiting their feeder since late October 2006. Wes
was able to keep the feeders thawed through the
winter. If interested in obtaining directions to view
this bird please call the Mueller's first at
573-334-4555.
SOUTHWEST
Lester Pannell reported on Wednesday, April 4, that a
GREATER ROADRUNNER has spent at least 4 days at a
private residence near Lebanon (Laclede Co.). The
area the bird is frequenting is 2 miles east of
Lebanon on Hwy 32.
