Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for April 5th,
2007. This report covers the period from March 30th to April 5th, and will
be updated again on April 12th.

At Arcadia Management Area, on the border of Exeter and West Greenwich, the
PILEATED WOODPECKER first reported on the 25th, was observed again on the
31st and the 1st. All the sightings come from the vicinity of the old picnic
shelter, along the yellow trail, near Stepstone Falls, along the Falls River.
This area can be accessed by parking just north of the horse stables on
Escoheag Hill Rd, and following an old paved road to the picnic shelter. Other
birds reported here included: 4 BROWN CREEPERS, 2 HAIRY WOODPECKERS, 1 PINE
WARBLER and a WINTER WREN.

Another sighting of a PILEATED WOODPECKER came from the Northwest corner of
the state. This bird was seen on the 4th, near the center of Chepachet, in
Glocester, flying over Acotes field on Route 44.

On the 31st at Trustom Pond NWR, 1 FOX SPARROW, 6 PURPLE FINCHES, 1
PIED-BILLED GREBE, and 1 WILSON'S SNIPE.

A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was reported on the 31st in Providence, at the
Save the Bay campus.

In Charlestown, at Burlingame park, 2 BLACK VULTURES were spotted on the 1st.

On the 31st, 2 EURASIAN WIGEON were observed with 20 AMERICAN WIGEON along
the East Bay bike path in East Providence.

A SNOW BUNTING was seen on the 31st along Matunuck Beach Road in Matunuck.
Also in Matunuck, a SNOWY EGRET and a GREAT EGRET were spotted on the 3rd.

Three BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS were seen roosting in a tree on Rose Island
this week.

On the 4th, at St.Mary's Pond in Portsmouth, 35 GLOSSY IBIS were seen.

Two PEREGRINE FALCONS were observed hunting over the Blackstone River in
downtown Pawtucket on the 30th.

Finally, along Route 123 near Chase Farm and Lincoln Woods in Lincoln, 1
adult BALD EAGLE was reported.

The total species count through April is 166. (Thanks to Dave Gumbley for
