For Good Friday, April 6, 2007, this is the Philadelphia Birdline. The
birdline is sponsored by several bird clubs from the Delaware Valley and
comes to you from the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia. I'm Andy
Ednie, glad to be with you. Armas Hill is away this week.
A possible LITTLE EGRET was found today, at the southeast corner of Bear
Swamp Pool in Bombay Hook NWR near Smyrna, Delaware. This bird was with 2
GREAT EGRETS and 2 SNOWY EGRETS, and had 2 long plumes originating at the
nape. While this bird does look good from the initial photos, the
possibility of a hybrid does exist.
A female YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD has been present in a flock of blackbirds
behind Philadelphia International airport in Delaware co. The bird was seen
along the Hog Island Road, just south of the UPS terminal. Four LONG-TAILED
DUCKS were also seen on the Delaware River behind the terminal. WILSON'S
SNIPE was reported in the wet fields around the airport.
In Cape May, a WHITE-WINGED DOVE was reported at Knox Ave near the
intersection with Pearl Ave. in Cape May Point over the weekend. That bird
has not been seen since Tuesday.
Elsewhere in Pennsylvania, The LAZULI BUNTING continues to be seen near
Green Lane in Montgomery Co. along St. Paul's Church Road in the town of
Green Hill. Parking is by the bridge over Macoby Creek.
The male SCOTT'S ORIOLE that has been coming to a yard in Mechanicsburg,
Cumberland Co., Pennsylvania, just west of Harrisburg, was last reported on
April 1st. That bird is being seen at along Kent Drive.
LITTLE GULLS are on the move along the Susquehanna River. 3 were seen on
Wednesday at the Conejohelia flats in Washington Boro, with 150 BONAPARTE'S
GULLS and 3 LAUGHING GULLS. 7 COMMON LOONS were also seen along the river.
The SANDHILL CRANE continues to be seen at Middle Creek Wildlife Area in
Lancaster Co. A NORTHERN SHRIKE made a brief appearance there last week at
willow Point.
A COMMON GREEN-WINGED TEAL was seen along Darby Creek in the John Heinz NWR,
off Rt 420 near Prospect Park. RUSTY BLACKBIRD was also present. A VIRGINIA
RAIL was also found along the dyke at the refuge. Waterfowl seen included
HORNED GREBE, RING-NECKED DUCK, BUFFLEHEAD, and Common Merganser.
A 1st winter THAYER'S GULL was reported last week in Tullytown, Bucks Co.
along with about 50 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS, 1-3 ICELAND GULLS and a
LAUGHING GULL.
The peak count of LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS at Lake Nockomixon this week was
320 on Tuesday, along with LAUGHING and BONAPARTE'S GULLS, 14 COMMON LOONS
and PIED-BILLED and HORNED GREBE.
RED-NECKED GREBES are still being reported at Lake Galena in Peace Valley,
Bucks Co.
A RED-NECKED GREBE going into breeding plumage was at Muddy Run, Lancaster
co. Other waterfowl there included WOOD DUCK, RING-NECKED DUCK, BUFFLEHEAD
and COMMON and HOODED MERGANSER. WILD TURKEY was seen at nearby Wissler's
Run and TREE and NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW were reported at Fisherman's
Park.
NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW was also reported along the Schuykill River at
West Pottsgrove Twp, Montgomery co.
A very early HOODED WARBLER was reported yesterday in a yard in Hershey,
Dauphin Co.
A PALM WARBLER was reported behind church Farm School near Coatsville in
Chester Co.
Also in Chester Co, 3 VESPER SPARROWS were found at the Bucktoe Tract, south
of Kennett Square.
2 FOX SPARROWS were reported coming to a feeder in Montgomery Co, along
with a Pine Warbler eating thistle seeds. The last FOX SPARROWS reported at
Green Lane's feeders were on Saturday, March 31st.
WILD TURKEY was also reported in Aston, Delaware Co, by the Sun East Credit
Union. OSPREY was reported nesting along the Delaware River, behind the new
Harrah's Casino in Chester.
Spring arrivals in Cape May this week include BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER,
LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH, YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER, BARN and NORTHERN
ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW and PURPLE MARTIN. SEMIPALMATED and PIPING PLOVER,
LEAST and PECTORAL SANDPIPERS were also reported. A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL
was reported on the beach off Miami Ave in the Villas.
Up to 8 BREWER'S BLACKBIRDS were seen at a farmhouse along Freas Road in
Salem Co. PECTORAL SANDPIPER and WILSON'S SNIPE were found at the nearby
Mannington Marsh, along with GLOSSY IBIS, LITTLE BLUE HERON, and CATTLE
EGRET. A flock of SNOW GEESE along Sharptown - Auburn Rd, below Salem had 2
ROSS' and 3 CACKLING GEESE among them.
COMMON GREEN-WINGED TEAL and EURASIAN WIGEON were reported last week at the
Forsytle NWR at Brigantine. HORNED GREBE and BLUE-WINGED TEAL were also
reported there. SNOWY EGRET and GLOSSY IBIS were found along with AMERICAN
OYSTERCATCHER, GREATER YELLOWLEGS and WILSON'S SNIPE. A RED-BREASTED
NUTHATCH was reported in the cedars behind the bathrooms, along with PINE
WARBLERS.
There are still a good number of 31 HARLEQUIN DUCKS at Barnegat Light, along
with LONG-TAILED DUCK, and BLACK SCOTER.
8 BLACK SCOTERS were found along the Delaware River at National Park, along
with 3 BONAPARTE'S GULLS and RUSTY BLACKBIRDS at Floodgates.
In Delaware, a YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT HERON was reported on Saturday at the
ponds by the intersection of Rts 100 and 92, across from Brandywine Creek
State Park north of Wilmington.
Downstate, the first BLACK-NECKED STILT was reported at the north pond of
the Logan Tract, Ted Harvey Conservation Area this week, along with COMMON
YELLOWTHROAT and BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER. There were 39 AMERICAN AVOCETS along
the Port Mahon Road, at Audubon Inlet today. PIPING PLOVER and AMERICAN
OYSTERCATCHER were reported at Cape Henlopen State Park.
