This is the Santa Barbara Audubon Society's rare bird report being recorded
on Friday, April 6 at 12:30 p.m. If you have a rare bird sighting to report,
call Karen Bridgers at 964-1316. For those of you who are getting the
transcript on the Internet, the rare bird alert number for Santa Barbara is
(805) 964-8240.
The wintering PAINTED REDSTART on the UCSB campus was still present on March
21. Park in the Mesa parking structure and walk south, past Campbell Hall,
to the Chemistry building. The bird has been south of the Chemistry building
in a large fig tree, or in the open area around the Eternal Flame.
On the UCSB campus, 27 SURFBIRDS were seen on the rocks below Campus Point
on the 3rd. This is a good spot from which to observe the spring seabird
migration.
Near UCSB, in the wetland area at the intersection of Los Carneros and Mesa,
a pair of BLUE-WINGED TEAL remained on the 2nd. At the southwest corner, a
SWAMP SPARROW was still there on the 2nd.
At the Goleta Sewage Plant, several YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDS were seen
yesterday. On Wednesday, the EURASIAN WIGEON was also present, on the south
pond.
Immediately north of the reservoir on Farren Road in west Goleta, two COMMON
GROUND-DOVES were seen on March 31.
Two ROSS'S GEESE remain in the pond at the Rancho Goleta Mobile Home Park at
the end of Ward Drive in Goleta.
In New Cuyama, 40 SWAINSON'S HAWKS were foraging in and over a plowed field
across Highway 166 from New Cuyama High School this morning.
Highlights from the Cachuma Lake boat trips this week included one immature
and one adult BALD EAGLE, four CATTLE EGRETS, and WILD TURKEYS.
At the 4.9 marker on Figueroa Mountain Road, a LEWIS'S WOODPECKER was
present on March 31.
In the North County, at Waller Park in Santa Maria, both the CACKLING GOOSE
and the ROSS'S GOOSE remain in the front pond.
The wintering EASTERN PHOEBE remained in the Park at River Oaks in Santa
Maria on March 31st.
The wintering WHITE-THROATED SPARROW was still in the southeast corner of
Old LaPurisima Mission Park on the south side of Lompoc, in the blackberry
bushes, this morning.
That is all the bird news for now, but, again, if you have a rare sighting
to report, call Karen Bridgers at 964-1316. Good birding in Santa Barbara
County.
