SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY

Jim Pike reported two GLOSSY IBIS on private property in the county. He is
currently negotiating with the land owner to allow birder access.

Sandy Koonce sent in several postings from the Redlands area. On April 5,
he saw an ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER and several LAWRENCE’S GOLDFINCHES at
Ford Park. April 6 he also had LAWRENCE’S GOLDFINCH at the University of
Redlands, near the Alumni House, as well as a male calling PHAINOPEPLA.

Peter Robertshaw reported a male BLACK-CHINNED HUMMINGBIRD and a male
CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD at the feeders in his yard. He also had a RED-
BREASTED SAPSUCKER.

April 7, Steve Druce sighted a pair of MOUNTAIN QUAIL behind his house in
the Crestline area. April 11, he sent in a report of an adult GREEN HERON
at the lower pond at Ford Park in Redlands. He provided directions to Ford
Park: take I-10 east, get off at Ford, turn right at the 76 station and
immediately right onto Parkford. Follow it to the end and park across from
the tennis courts. Walk into the park and head to the higher ground on
your right. There is a large palm tree at the end of the second pond and a
bench on the left. That is where he saw the bird. April 10, Steve saw a
pair of HAIRY WOODPECKERS behind his house in Crestline.

Tom Benson reported from Cal State San Bernardino on April 7. Sightings
included 2 northbound SWAINSON’S HAWKS over Little Badger Hill, a male
VERMILION FLYCATCHER near the track, a visible singing GRASSHOPPER SPARROW
in the preserve behind Little Badger Hill, and a BLACK-THROATED GRAY

Kirk Stitt made an Easter day birding trip through Waterman Canyon and to
Cal State. He spotted the VERMILION that Tom had reported, as well as a

any new rare birds or updates on any of the birds in this report, PLEASE
LET US KNOW. We can't update reports if we don't hear from you.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

In general, birds that are on this weekly summary are those that are
classified as at least rare in “Birds of Southern California” by Garrett
and Dunn, “Birds of the Salton Sea” by Patten, McCaskie, and Unitt, or
in “Birds of the Lower Colorado River Valley” by Rosenberg, Ohmart,
Hunter, and Anderson. Rarity can be regional or seasonal. For example, a
nuthatch reported at the Salton Sea, where it is rare, may be on the
summary. That same bird reported from the San Bernardino Mountains, where
it is common, would not be. A sparrow reported as a rarity in Riverside
in July, may be common there in December.
