This is the Thursday, April 12, 2007 Missouri Rare
Bird Alert, a statewide service of the Audubon Society
of Missouri, serving the birding community of Missouri
since 1901. The bird alert is compiled from reports
submitted by ASM members and other birders throughout
the state.
** NOTE: The report includes birds that are listed as
rare, casual, or accidental on the 2003 Annotated
Checklist of Missouri Birds (with revisions in 2004
and 2005). Species that appear in ALL CAPS in the
“Species Mentioned” section are listed as “casual” or
“accidental” and thus require documentation. (Note
that some birds may be considered rare only during a
particular season or in a particular part of the
state.) The Missouri checklist can be accessed at:

ST. LOUIS AREA
On Saturday, April 7, Joe Eades and Jim Malone found a
male CINNAMON TEAL mixed with Blue-winged Teal. The
bird was observed in the flooded woods along Sandy
Slough Road at the Winfield Lock and Dam (Lincoln
Co.). To reach this area, turn left on Sandy Slough
Road from the road that leads to the Winfield Lock and
Dam. Take Sandy Slough Road about 0.75 miles to where
there is a brown glass beer bottle on top of a stick.
On Sunday, April 8, Joe Eades observed a BLACK VULTURE
near Pevely (Jefferson Co.). This is a bit further
north of an observation than the Black Vultures that
have been reported from the St. Louis area the last
few years.
Also on Sunday, April 8, Charlene Malone found a
LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE along Hwy C in St. Charles County.
Dave Rogles relocated the bird on Monday, April 9.
The bird was observed perched on a utility line on the
left side of Hwy C, just north of Silvers Road out of
old town St. Peters.
On Tuesday, April 10, Dave Rogles observed another
LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE. This bird was observed perched on
a utility line along Keeteman Road, about 100 yards
past the southern junction with Glacial Sand Road
(Lincoln Co.).
On Wednesday, April 11, many birders were able to
enjoy shorebirding at Riverlands MBS (St. Charles
Co.). 3 WHIMBRELS and as many as 7 HUDSONIAN GODWITS
were observed in Ellis Bay near the observation tower,
while at least 4 AMERICAN AVOCETS were observed from
the Lincoln Shields side. On Thursday, April 12, only
the 7 HUDSONIAN GODWITS were reported to still be
present. However, this time the godwits were located
on the mudflats adjacent the Ellis Island parking lot.
On Thursday, April 12, Paul Bauer reported 2 MARBLED
GODWITS at Columbia Bottoms CA (St. Louis Co.). These
birds were observed in Pool #3, from the new gravel
road.
COLUMBIA/CENTRAL
The male CINNAMON TEAL, first reported by Jennifer
Hamel on Thursday, April 5, continues to be seen at

Birders searching for this bird should be aware that a
hybrid Blue-winged Teal x Cinnamon Teal hybrid has
also been reported at Eagle Bluffs CA the last week.
On Friday, April 6, at Eagle Bluffs CA Brad Jacobs and
others observed a light morph SWAINSONS’S HAWK and a
dark morph SWAINSON’S HAWK. These birds seemed to be
favoring the newly plowed fields. Also on Friday,
Brad and others enjoyed watching a large female
PEREGRINE FALCON catch three different Green-winged
Teal. Joe Eades and Jim Malone observed this falcon
take another Green-winged Teal on Saturday, April 7.

field trip observed a single WHIMBREL flying from the
Perche Creek area and landing in the Pool 7 area
(inaccessible) at Eagle Bluffs CA.
