Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for April 12th,
2007. This report covers the period from April 6th to April 12th, and will
be updated again on April 19th.

This was a slow week for rare bird reports in the area. The best sighting
comes from Middletown. A NORTHERN GOSHAWK was observed flying over the Naval
Undersea Warfare Center and Wanumetomomy Golf Course on the 11th. Also in
Middletown, a MERLIN was seen near Sisson Pond on the 12th.

The first report of the year of BLUE-WINGED TEAL came from Lonsdale Marsh on
the 10th. One male and one female were spotted along with 30 GREEN-WINGED
TEAL, 12 AMERICAN WIGEON, 26 WOOD DUCK, 15 GADWALL and 4 COMMOM MERGANSER.

On the 6th, 1 BLACK VULTURE was seen in Hopkinton, over Routes 3 and 95.

Also reported on the 6th from Rome Point in North Kingstown, 1 LONG-TAILED
DUCK.

Several NORTHERN BOBWHITE were seen along West Beach Road in Charlestown,
and a BOBWHITE was heard calling near the Wood River in Wyoming on the 11th.

On the 9th, 1 LITTLE BLUE HERON was found at Genesee Swamp in South
Kingstown. . It was seen north east of the South County Bike Path near the bridge
over White Horn Brook. Another LITTLE BLUE HERON was found on the 11th in
Hopkinton. The bird was observed in a wet ditch near Route 3.

At Napatree Point in Westerly the following were reported this week: 15
HORNED GREBES, 5 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS, 2 PIPING PLOVERS, 4 RUDDY TURNSTONES,
1 SANDERLING, 65 DUNLIN, 11 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS and 2 SAVANNAH SPARROWS.

At Succotash Marsh in Jerusalem, 1 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was spotted on
the 10th.

In Jamestown, 45 GLOSSY IBIS were seen feeding in the fields along Weedon
Lane on the 8th, and 2 WILSON'S SNIPE were seen here on the 12th. In Sheffield
Cove, 1 SNOWY EGRET was reported on the 8th. At Beavertail Point this week,
25 PURPLE SANDPIPER and 12 HARLEQUIN DUCKS.

Away from the coast, on Iron Mine Hill Road in North Smithfield, 15 GLOSSY
IBIS were spotted on the 6th.
