Observers in Alberta can be on the lookout for Alberta's first SMEW. The bird, a male, was discovered on Saturday, April 7 by Gary Kurtz on a slough on the north side of Hwy 5, a few kms east of Mountain View in SW Alberta. Gary photographed the bird. The area was thoroughly searched by several observers on Sunday, April 8, but the bird was not relocated.

A bird that may have been a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD appeared briefly in the yard of Rick Wigmore in the Gleneagles subdivision of Cochrane late last week. The bird stayed only a few minutes. On Monday, April 2, Rick had approximately 100 GRAY-CROWNED ROSY FINCHES in his yard.

There were 2 reports on Saturday, April 7 of earlier than usual Spring arrivals in the Calgary area. Terry Korolyk observed 4 TREE SWALLOWS foraging over the Bow River, north of the Hwy 22X bridge, then later watched an AMERICAN PIPIT along the shoreline of Mallard Point, also in east Fish Creek PP. On Sunday, April 8, Terry observed a LONG-BILLED CURLEW along Hwy 2 just north of Fort Macleod, and on Monday, April 9, he reported a BLACK-NECKED STILT a few kms east of Shepard on Twp Rd 232. Greg Wagner watched 5 EARED GREBES and a BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERON at Frank Lake east of High River on April 8, while Cedric Hitchon and members of a CFNS field trip reported a SONG SPARROW was near the Carseland Weir on April 7. Mike Heigl reported a BLUE-WINGED TEAL at Frank Lake on April 7. SWAINSON'S HAWKS were also reported over the W/E.

Ray Woods reported a LONG-TAILED DUCK and 5 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS were at the Carseland Weir on April 7. Terry Korolyk is reporting high numbers of GREATER SCAUP this Spring. On April 6, 10 birds were at the Chestermere Lake Dam and 30 birds were in the N/W corner of Clear Lake east of Stavely on April 8. Dwight Knapik saw a ROSS'S GOOSE at the Calgary Zoo Ranch south of Calgary on April 7, while Jim Davis reported a female RED-BREASTED MERGANSER was near the footbridge in east Fish Creek PP Burnsmead area on April 6. Cedric Hitchon and members of CFNS saw at least 4 male EURASIAN WIGEONS near Frank Lake on April 7.

Terry Korolyk reported 3 TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRES along Threepoint Creek west of Millarville on April 6. Allan Coulter had a VARIED THRUSH in his yard in the Woodbine subdivision of Calgary on Sunday, April 8.
