Alabama Rare Bird Report – Friday, April 13, 2007.
A large, dark, uncollared swift matching the description of a BLACK SWIFT was seen 4/11 in the Ft. Morgan area several times near Battery Dearborn, over the old runway, and possibly other locations. Apparently this swift was seen again at the fort the morning of 4/12. The same (or another!) large dark swift was also seen on Dauphin Island 4/11. I’ve heard no reports so far whether these birds were seen again today. There are no previous Alabama records and as far as I can tell no accepted records for Black Swift east of the Mississippi River. Obviously further information on appearances of this bird (or birds) are greatly desired along with any written descriptions, photos, or similar documentation.
Birding has been fairly active along the coast this last week with good numbers of migrants reported on both Dauphin Island and at Ft. Morgan. The Hummer/Bird Study Group closed out their spring session at Ft. Morgan today after banding a total of 1800 individuals comprising 77 species. CAVE SWALLOWS remain in the general area of the fort where dozens were discovered last weekend. [DeAL 64-B4][BGtA p. 23]
A CAVE SWALLOW was seen 4/11 at the airport marsh on Dauphin Island. [DeAL 64-B3][BGtA p. 13]
The next meeting of the Alabama Ornithological Society will be held on Dauphin Island April 20-22.
