The first WHITE-THROATED SPARROW of this year's Spring migration has been reported in our birding area. Carol Coulter observed the bird in her yard in the Southview subdivision of SE Calgary on Tuesday, April 17.

On Tuesday, April 17, Milt Spitzer reported a SANDHILL CRANE west of Cochrane. The bird was circling over Twp Rd 252 just north of Hwy 1, north of the Hwy 68 junction. On Hwy 68 Milt heard a BARRED OWL calling from a location near the Jumpingpound Creek bridge over Hwy 68.

GREATER SCAUP have been reported in almost unheard of numbers in Southern Alberta this Spring. Andrew Slater noted several at Glenmore Reservoir in SW Calgary on Tuesday, April 17. On Sunday, April 15, Terry Korolyk observed at least 41 birds at Clear Lake, 15 kms east of Stavely on Twp Rds 140 & 142, and saw another 6 birds at the north end of Lake Silver which is on the east side of Hwy 2, just north of Nanton. Over 300 birds of the species have moved through our area this Spring. Andrew Slater observed a LONG-TAILED DUCK at Glenmore Reservoir on April 17 and also reported 100 TRUMPETER SWANS there. Bill Wilson observed 10 RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS in our area on Wednesday, April 18. He saw 3 males & 2 females at the Weir at Wyndham-Carseland PP, then saw another 3 males and 2 females at Glenmore Reservoir.

Recent gull reports include 2 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS seen at the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary in SE Calgary on Saturday, April 14, and a GLAUCOUS GULL seen on the Bow River near the 12 St NE bridge on April 12 by Nimali Seneviratne.

Penny Hajdar reported at least 6 BLACK-NECKED STILTS near her home between Cayley & High River on Tuesday, April 17.

The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is Monday, April 23.
