Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for April 19th,
2007. This report covers the period from April 13th to April 19th, and will
be updated again on April 26th.
A strong coastal storm buffeted the east coast for several days with the
highest winds from the SSE occurring on the 16th. That morning at Point Judith,
3 SOOTY TERNS were identified, and another was seen at nearby Roger Wheeler
Beach. A MANX SHEARWATER was spotted at Point Judith, and 2 LITTLE GULLS
were seen at Camp Cronin.
At Beavertail Point in Jamestown, seen on the 16th during the storm was an
adult ICELAND GULL.
In the parking lot at East Matunuck State Beach, 4 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS
were riding out the storm on the 16th. Also in Matunuck, east of Moonstone
Beach Road in a small pond behind the
cottages at Roy Carpenter's beach, 3 BLUE-WINGED TEAL were seen several
times this week.
On the 18th, a RED PHALAROPE was observed from Camp Cronin in Narraganset.
This bird was found again later that day at Roger Wheeler Beach, which is
less than a mile from Camp Cronin. The RED PHALAROPE was found again in the
same place in the early morning of the 19th, but by 8 AM the bird disappeared.
An adult NORTHERN GOSHAWK was reported on the 17th in Jamestown at the
corner of Southwest Avenue. and High Street. Also in Jamestown, in the fields
along Weeden Lane, 1 WILSON'S SNIPE and about 65 GLOSSY IBIS were seen this week.
On the 16th, off Rose Island Lighthouse in Newport, 1 BLACK GUILLEMOT and a
RED-NECKED GREBE were observed.
Seen at the Route 91 Bradford Boat Landing on the Pawcatuck River in
Westerly on the 16th was 1 CATTLE EGRET.
On the 14th at St. Mary's Pond in Portsmouth, 65 GLOSSY IBIS, 2 NORTHERN
SHOVELERS and 6 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS.
At Succotash Marsh in East Matunuck, 2-3 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS were
reported several times this past week.
On the 14th at Sachuest Point in Middletown, 2 BARROW'S GOLDENEYE along with
21 HARLEQUIN DUCKS and 30 PURPLE SANDPIPERS.
At ASRI’s Birdfest in Bristol on the 14th, a VIRGINIA RAIL was heard calling
near the boardwalk in the afternoon.
Finally, 2 COMMON RAVENS were seen and heard calling on the 16th. They were
found at the Johnston/Scituate line.
On May 14th, a trip to Block Island is planned. We will be taking the 6:30
a.m. ferry from Point Judith and the 5:00 p.m. ferry from Block Island. This
new trip is an exciting way to see Block Island during spring migration. We
will be taking ASRI's van on the early ferry and spending the day exploring the
island in searching for birds. Call 949-5454 for more details.
That's all for this week, thank you for calling and good birding!
