This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon Society for
Thursday April 19, 2007 with reports of SWAINSON'S WARBLER, RUFF,
BLACK-HEADED GULL, LITTLE GULLS, seasonal and local reports of
interest, and announcements.
.
A SWAINSON'S WARBLER was discovered at Sandy Hook Apr 18. The bird
was found in a wet thicket behind two brick culverts at the southwest
corner of the field south of parking area K. Other migrants found at
the hook this week were YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO, PROTHONOTARY WARBLER,
HOODED WARBLER, OVENBIRD, ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK, 4 INDIGO BUNTINGS,
and BLUE GROSBEAK. An adult LITTLE GULL was found off the end of the
fisherman's trail Apr 19 and a first-year LITTLE GULL was found at
Plum Island Apr 15. A SANDWICH TERN was a fly-by over parking area B
Apr 18 and a CASPIAN TERN flew past SHBO Apr 13. A free, detailed
birding map of Sandy Hook is available at SHBO; check the sightings
log there for daily reports.

At Seven Presidents Park in Long Branch an adult alternate plumage
BLACK-HEADED GULL, 2-3 LITTLE GULLS, and 2 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS
were found Apr 15. The BLACK-HEADED GULL and one LITTLE GULL were
still present there Apr 16. Two BLACK-HEADED GULLS (one adult and
one first-year) were found at Griffin St Memorial Park in Monmouth
Beach Apr 16 and a LITTLE GULL was noted there Apr 17. Another
LITTLE GULL was noted off Pullman Ave in Elberon Apr 15 & 16.

Further south along the North Shore the drake EURASIAN WIGEON was
sighted again at Silver Lake in Belmar Apr 15-16, 2 RED-NECKED GREBES
were noted at Wreck Pond Apr 16, 2 LITTLE GULLS continued through Apr
18 at Manasquan Inlet and a first-year ICELAND GULL and an early
LEAST TERN were detected there Apr 16. Most unusual was a YELLOW-
THROATED WARBLER at the corner of 13th and Ocean Blvd in Belmar Apr 14.

A RUFF was discovered in Gloucester County off the railroad tracks
along High Hill Rd Apr 14 and viewed again there on a rising tide Apr
19.
.
At Shelter Cove in Toms River the wintering GREATER WHITE-FRONTED
GOOSE was seen Apr 17-18 along with a PECTORAL SANDPIPER.
.
Two RED-NECKED GREBES were noted at the Barnegat Twp municipal boat
dock Apr 16.
.
At Spruce Run Reservoir 19 LONG-TAILED DUCKS, RED-THROATED LOON, RED-
NECKED GREBE, and RED-BREASTED MERGANSER were found Apr 15. One RED-
NECKED GREBE remained through Apr 19; a CASPIAN TERN was found there
the same day. Also in Hunterdon County 3 RED-NECKED GREBES were
noted at Round Valley Reservoir Apr 18.

Culvers Lake in Sussex County had RED-NECKED GREBE, 14 HORNED GREBES,
and 2 RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS Apr 13.

Liberty State Park in Jersey City hosted 3 SURF SCOTERS and up to 8
FOX SPARROWS this week.
