This is the Voice of Audubon for Monday, April 17.
During this weekend's "significant weather event" (nor'easter),
seawatches at
Andrew's Point in Rockport on Sunday and Monday yielded a KING EIDER,
9 BRANT, 34 HARLEQUIN DUCKS, 343 LONG-TAILED DUCKS, 28 RED-
THROATED and 21 COMMON LOONS, 15 RED-NECKED GREBES, 49
NORTHERN FULMARS, 4 SOOTY SHEARWATERS, 66 LEACH'S STORM-PETRELS, 331
NORTHERN GANNETS, one LAUGHING GULL, 2 ICELAND
GULLS, 352 BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES, 7 COMMON MURRES, 15
THICK-BILLED MURRES, 390 RAZORBILLS, and 31 BLACK GUILLEMOTS.
Other reports from Cape Ann noted 150 BONAPARTE'S GULLS and a
BLACK-HEADED GULL in Gloucester, 35 PURPLE SANDPIPERS, and 3
BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS.
In the Newburyport area, the REEVE (female Ruff) on Joppa Flats was
last
reported on Sunday. In Newbury, an AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER was
on Little's Lane and a pair of BLUE-WINGED TEAL, a GLOSSY IBIS and
30 WILSON'S SNIPE were off Scotland Road. Two PIPING PLOVERS and
50 BRANT were reported on Plum Island. a DOVEKIE was picked up at
Cashman Park in Newburyport today.
At Nelson's Beach, Plymouth, on Sunday there was a probable
FRANKLIN'S
GULL along with a LAUGHING GULL and 160 BRANT. On nearby Duxbury
Beach there were 11 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS and 5 PIPING PLOVERS.
At the Cumberland Farms fields in Middleboro-Halifax, there were 350
WILSON'S SNIPE, 1-2 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, 2 GREATER
YELLOWLEGS, and 4 HORNED LARKS. In Scituate there were 8 GREAT
CORMORANTS, 10 HARLEQUIN DUCKS, 150 PURPLE SANDPIPERS,
and 50 DUNLIN.
In Westport there were 35 GREATER and 8 LESSER SCAUP, 26 COMMON
EIDERS, 9 HARLEQUIN DUCKS, 3 RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS, 16
HORNED GREBES, 88 DOUBLE CRESTED CORMORANTS, 7 GREAT
EGRETS, 4 GLOSSY IBIS, 1 PIPING PLOVER, 18 SANDERLINGS, 1
PURPLE SANDPIPER, 60 DUNLIN, 35 WILSON'S SNIPE, 1 BARN
SWALLOW, a WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW, and 9 EASTERN
MEADOWLARKS.
At the Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge in Concord, weekend
reports included 5 AMERICAN WIGEON, 3 BLUE-WINGED TEAL, 5
NORTHERN SHOVELERS, 2 LESSER and one GREATER SCAUP, 80
RING-NECKED DUCKS, 2 AMERICAN COOTS, 3 PIED-BILLED
GREBES, 4 BONAPARTE'S GULLS, and 300 TREE SWALLOWS.
Elsewhere in Concord, at Nine-Acre Corner there was a EURASIAN
GREEN-WINGED TEAL and a NORTHERN HARRIER, and at the
prison fields in West Concord, there was a LESSER BLACK-BACKED
GULL. a CHIPPING SPARROW was also reported in Concord.
On Martha's Vineyard, there was a male PAINTED BUNTING, several
INDIGO BUNTINGS, a BLUE GROSBEAK, and a GLAUCOUS GULL
while on Nantucket there were at least three INDIGO BUNTINGS, an
adult BALTIMORE ORIOLE, a PURPLE FINCH, a ROSE-BREASTED
GROSBEAK, and an early RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD
nectaring on daffodils. In Mashpee there were 7 OSPREY, 2 PIPING
PLOVERS, 3 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, and a LAUGHING GULL.
Miscellaneous reports included a LAUGHING GULL and a NORTHERN
SHOVELER in Acton, a COMMON RAVEN in Waltham, 2 BARRED
OWLS in Lincoln, a NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW in
Uxbridge, 175 RUDDY DUCKS in Pembroke and 300 GREEN-WINGED
TEAL and 20 GLOSSY IBIS in West Bridgewater, a RED-HEADED
and two PILEATED WOODPECKERS in Littleton, 4 PIPING PLOVERS
in Sandwich, and an INDIGO BUNTING in Acushnet.
