This is a summary of reports from the Northwestern
California Bird Alert , sponsored by the City of Arcata, Redwood
Region
Audubon Society, and generous support from local birders. Most
birds reported are in Humboldt County unless otherwise noted.
Birds in caps under the "birds mentioned" section have less than 50
(plus
or minus 5) records of occurrence in Northwestern California as
defined in Stan Harris's " Northwestern California Birds" (3rd
edition, 2005). California Bird Records Committee review species
are noted with an asterisk (*). Send reports of California Bird

BELATED REPORTS:
A male ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK was seen at a feeder in Trinidad on 25 March
(Melodie Hamilton).
CANADA GEESE were seen on a nest in the Shively area on 30 March (Tom
Leskiw).

A 1st winter GLAUCOUS GULL was at the carwash off of Giuntoli Lane in Arcata
(Kerry Ross).
A 3rd winter GLAUCOUS GULL was seen at the Trinidad Pier Beach. A
SLATE-COLORED JUNCO that was wintering in Trinidad was last seen yesterday
on the 2nd of Apr. A pair of PILEATED WOODPECKERS were drumming on a stump
by Cory Road (Melodie Hamilton).
The 2nd cycle SLATY-BACKED GULL* was still present at the Alexandre Dairy in
DEL NORTE COUNTY; the bird was on top of the barn near the large pond (Alan
Barron).
A WHIMBREL was seen on the beach at Samoa Dunes (Tom Leskiw).

An adult BROWN BOOBY* flew by Point Saint George in the morning, heading
north; this is the second record for DEL NORTE COUNTY (Alan Barron).
Also in DEL NORTE COUNTY the SLATY-BACKED and LAUGHING GULLS continued near
the Alexandre Dairy. The birds were in irrigated pastures east of the main
complex, which involved driving down a manure/muddy road (get permisson from
the dairy to go here; Alan Barron).
A COMMON YELLOWTHROAT was seen at the Eureka Marsh (Tom Leskiw).
At the Arcata Marsh a CLARK'S GREBE was seen near the mouth of Butcher
Slough and a RED-BREASTED MERGANSER was seen on Klopp Lake (Cindy Moyer).
A singing PALM WARBLER was seen at the Arcata Marsh (Larry Marin).

Highlights from a pelagic trip aboard the Humboldt State University
vessel--The Coral Sea--included: 45 BLACK-FOOTED ALBATROSS, 3 LAYSAN
ALBATROSS, 1 POMARINE JAEGER, 4 SABINE'S GULLS, 65 NORTHERN FULMARS, 12
MARBLED MURRELETS, 40 RHINOCEROS AUKLETS, 250 SOOTY SHEARWATERS, and 15
PINK-FOOTED SHEARWATERS (Kerry Ross).

In DEL NORTE COUNTY a BREWER'S SPARROW was found in the Point Saint George
parking lot. The bird was spending it's time foraging along the edges of the
parking lot (Alan Barron).
Highlights from the weekly Saturday Arcata Marsh Walk included: 1 CHIPPING
SPARROW (near the outer dike where I Street bends to the south) and a MERLIN
[McDaniel Slough (Chet Ogan)].
A male CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD came to a feeder at the end of Hewitt Road in
McKinleyville (Gary Lester).

The BREWER'S SPARROW continued at the Point Saint George parking lot in DEL
NORTE COUNTY. The SLATY-BACKED GULL continued east of the Alexandre Dairy
(Alan Barron).
9 Apr.

In DEL NORTE COUNTY the SLATY-BACKED GULL was still present in the vicinity
of the Alexandre Dairy (Lucas Brug).
Three unseasonal BROWN PELICANS were seen off of Trinidad Head in Trinidad
(Michael Morris).
10 Apr.

An observer conducted a seawatch from 11am-4pm at Patrick's Point State
Park. The highlight was an alternate plumaged HORNED PUFFIN seen flying
north. Other highlights included 39 SOOTY SHEARWATERS and 2 PINK-FOOTED
SHEARWATERS (Barry Sauppe).
13 Apr.

A PEREGRINE FALCON was seen inland near Berry Summit. Fourteen
DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS were seen at the mouth of Willow Creek, along with
an OSPREY on a nest. Four BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHERS were seen along Friday
Ridge Road, 1.9 miles from the town of Willow Creek; also here were
recently-arrived CASSIN'S VIREO and NASHVILLE WARBLER. A RUFFED GROUSE was
heard near the end of Forest Service Road 6N13B; a PILEATED WOODPECKER and
SHARP-SHINNED HAWK was also in the vicinity (Tom Leskiw).

A BALD EAGLE and other birds were seen from Skunk Cabbage Hill near Orick
(Colleen Keeley Marks).
In DEL NORTE COUNTY the SLATY-BACKED and LAUGHING GULL were still present in
the Alexandre Dairy vicinity (Lucas Brug).

A singing ORCHARD ORIOLE was seen in Arcata at a residence on F Street
directly behind Longs (Tristan McKee).
A BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER was seen at the northeastern corner of the Log
Pond at the Arcata Marsh (Kerry Ross).
