WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS
This is the Western Voice of Audubon for Monday, April 16, 2007.
The male EURASIAN WIGEON was present all week in Hatfield on Great
Pond. It was usually seen from the bluff in and near the DPW yard on
Straits Road. Also in the area were 20 AMERICAN WIGION, 16
GREEN-WINGED TEAL, a NORTHERN SHOVELER, 14 HOODED MERGANSERS, a
RED-BREASTED MERGANSER, a GREATER SCAUP, a COMMON GOLDENEYE and 2
PIED-BILLED GREBES.
Seen in Hadley were 3 AMERICAN WIGEON, 8 GREEN-WINGED
TEAL, a BUFFLEHEAD, 2 PIED-BILLED GREBES, a COMMON
LOON, 2 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 42 WILSON’S SNIPE, 4
AMERICAN PIPITS, a PINE WARBLER, a FIELD SPARROW, a
CHIPPING SPARROW, and 6 FOX SPARROWS.
At Quabbin Park there were 27 RING-NECKED DUCKS, 3
BUFLEHEAD, 4 LESSER SCAUP, 2 COMMON LOONS, and a
HORNED GREBE.
Two BONAPARTE’S GULLS were in Southwick, a FIELD SPARROW
was seen in Springfield, a PURPLE FINCH and FOX SPARROW were
reported in Brimfield, and a VIRGINIA RAIL and 2 RUSTY
BLACKBIRDS in Belchertown.
At Turners Falls there were 75 RING-NECKED DUCKS, 9
BUFFLEHEAD, 3 COMMON LOONS, a PIED-BILLED GREBE, 10
DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS, and 3 BONAPARTE’S GULLS.
Noted in Northampton were an AMERICAN BITTERN, a PIED-BILLED
GREBE, a FISH CROW, 2 PALM WARBLERS, a LOUISIANA
WATERTHRUSH, a HERMIT THRUSH, and 3 EASTERN
MEADOWLARKS.
A pair of SANDHILL CRANES have returned for the fifth year to New
Marleboro, a NORTHERN GOSHAWK was seen in Becket, a RED-
BREASTED MERGANSER in Cheshire, a WINTER WREN and RUBY-
CROWNED KINGLET in Williamstown, and 6 PURPLE FINCHES were
noted in Dalton.
Seen in Amherst were a PALM WARBLER, a FIELD SPARROW, and 16
RUSTY BLACKBIRDS, and reported in Holyoke were 32 RING-
NECKED DUCKS, a PALM WARBLER, and 4 PINE WARBLERS.
