This is the Santa Barbara Audubon Society's rare bird report being recorded
on Friday, April 27 at 1:00 p.m. If you have a rare bird sighting to report,
call Karen Bridgers at 964-1316. For those of you who are getting the
transcript on the Internet, the rare bird alert number for Santa Barbara is
(805) 964-8240.
The Goleta Sewage Plant has been good for gulls in the last week, and good
finds included a BLACK-HEADED GULL that stayed for only one day on the 20th,
and a FRANKLIN'S GULL that was there on Wednesday. Also here are
YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDS and the continuing EURASIAN WIGEON. Please remember
to sign in at the office and to stay on the asphalt paths. Note that the
sewage plant is not accessible on weekends.
A RED-NECKED GREBE was off of Stearns Wharf in Santa Barbara on the 20th,
and a first winter male BLACK SCOTER was just west of the wharf on the 22nd.
The Berkeley bike bridge area on San Jose Creek had good numbers of migrants
this morning, including at least one continuing male CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD.
Other Calliopes have been reported this week at Devereux Slough, and in the
bottlebrush at the Evergreen Open Space in west Goleta.
At Devereux Slough, the wintering TROPICAL KINGBIRD was still present on the
22nd, along with four CATTLE EGRETS. On the 21st, there were 5 YELLOW-HEADED
BLACKBIRDS in the area of the day care center.
At the wetlands area at Los Carneros and Mesa Road, near UCSB, 11
WHITE-FACED IBIS were present yesterday.
On Farren Road in west Goleta, there were BLUE GROSBEAKS, a COSTA'S
HUMMINGBIRD and other migrants this morning. A GRASSHOPPER SPARROW was seen
here on the 14th, and a COMMON GROUND-DOVE was at the reservoir on the 21st.
At Campus Point, on the UCSB campus, a female BLACK SCOTER was in the water
with Surf Scoters yesterday afternoon, and on Wednesday a WHITE-WINGED
SCOTER flew by going east. A WANDERING TATTLER was on the rocks on Monday,
and two SURFBIRDS were there on Saturday the 21st.
Two ROSS'S GEESE remain in the pond at the Rancho Goleta Mobile Home Park at
the end of Ward Drive in Goleta.
Highlights at Cachuma Lake last week included several YELLOW-HEADED
BLACKBIRDS, which were frequenting a feeder at campsite 14.
In the North County, at Waller Park in Santa Maria, both the CACKLING GOOSE
and the ROSS'S GOOSE remain in the front pond.
That is all the bird news for now, but, again, if you have a rare sighting
to report, call Karen Bridgers at 964-1316. Good birding in Santa Barbara
County.
