SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY

Jim Pike reported from the East Mojave on Apr. 22. Sightings included a
LUCY’S WARBLER in Zzyzx. He also saw two SURF SCOTERS at Baker and a
NORTHERN PARULA singing at China Ranch. China Ranch also had good numbers
of LUCY’S WARBLERS, where Jim counted 23 from just south of the B&B to the
upper end of the road to the north. Flycatchers were also good at all
these locations, including 16 GRAY FLYCATCHERS, 9 HAMMOND’S FLYCATCHERS, 5
DUSKY FLYCATCHERS, and one PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHER.

Steve Myers reported from Mojave Narrows Regional Park on Apr. 22.
Highlights included HAMMOND’S FLYCATCHERS, GRAY FLYCATCHERS, an AMERICAN
BITTERN in the marsh north of Horseshoe Lake, a male VERMILION FLYCATCHER,
and one “LEAST” BELL’S VIREO along the river. Steve also noted he had a
PURPLE MARTIN and BANK SWALLOW at his yard in Spring Valley Lake.

Thomas Miko birded Morongo Canyon Preserve on Apr. 22. Highlights included
LAZULI BUNTING, GRAY, DUSKY, and PACIFIC SLOPE FLYCATCHER at Covington
Park, and a VIRGINIA RAIL on the willow trail.

Daniel Williams birded the Zzyzx area on Apr. 23, where he saw a SOLITARY
SANDPIPER at the first pond, a TOWNSEND’S SOLITAIRE hanging around the
palm court just north of the BBQ patio, and an OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER in
the same location. The mesquite on the south side of the compound had
LUCY’S WARBLERS and MACGILLIVRAY’S WARBLERS. Up Cima Dome from the Kelso
Junction he had a pair of BLACK-CHINNED SPARROWS and a pair of GREEN-
TAILED TOWHEE. He also had many SCOTT’S ORIOLES, a TOWNSEND’S WARBLER, 5
PINYON JAYS, and a GILDED FLICKER.

Peter Robertshaw reported many expected birds, including a pair of HOODED
ORIOLES at his yard in the Crestline area.

Martha Estus reported a BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER at Morongo Preserve on
Apr. 25. She also birded Black Rock Canyon campground, where she found 5
SCOTT’S ORIOLES, and 1 BLACK-CHINNED SPARROW.

Kyri Freeman reported from the campus of Barstow College on Apr. 25. She
spotted a pair of ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER.

RIVERSIDE COUNTY

Paul Boudreau reported from the Desert Hot Springs area on Apr. 21, when
he saw a pair of SCOTT’S ORIOLE, a male BULLOCK’S ORIOLE, a pair of
MACGILLIVRAY’S WARBLER, HUTTON’S VIREO, and HAMMOND’S FLYCATCHER. All the
birds were seen around his yard. Later in the week, Paul reported a HERMIT
THRUSH and 2 male LAZULI BUNTING in his yard.

Roger Higson reported seeing two summer plumage FRANKLIN’S GULLS flying
north from Blythe on Apr. 21. Later in the week, he posted a report of
many swallows, including TREE SWALLOW, BARN SWALLOW, VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOW,
and BANK SWALLOW. He also had 3 female PURPLE MARTIN, VAUX’S SWIFT, a
WARBLING VIREO on the same branch as a PLUMBEOUS VIREO, and a BELL’S VIREO
which later flew to the same branch.

Don Burtram also reported some PURPLE MARTIN at San Jacinto on Apr. 21.
The birds wee at the north ponds near the boardwalk. He also saw some BLUE
GROSBEAK in the area.

Larry LaPre reported from Hidden Valley on Apr. 22, where he had several
VAUX’S SWIFT, a YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT, and four separate BELL’S VIREO
territories along the horse path near the ponds.

Lidia Seebeck reported some VAUX’S SWIFT at Fairmount Park on Apr., 22.

Robert Packard confirmed the swifts seen by Lidia Seebeck and also saw 2
BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, 1 COMMON MOORHEN, 2 AMAZONAS PARROTS, 21 VIOLET-
GREEN SWALLOW, and 3 WESTERN BLUEBIRD. At the UCR Botanical Garden, Robert
had 1 RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, a male and female CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD, and 2
PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHER.

Adam Timura reported a MACGILLIVRAY’S WARBLER in Riverside on Apr. 23.

Dan Williams reported many swallows on the beach at Lake Perris on Apr.
24. He was able to sort out at least 2 BANK SWALLOWS, and 2 VAUX’S SWIFTS.
Later, Dan reported a BROAD-WINGED HAWK over Evergreen Cemetery at 14th
and Pine in Riverside.

Mike Gurbada reported a bright male TOWNSEND’S WARBLER in willow in the
first clump of trees 25 yards south of the parking lof off Central Ave. in
Riverside on Apr. 25.



IMPERIAL COUNTY

John Puschock revised an earlier report of an AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER
saying that it may be a PACIFIC GOLDEN PLOVER. The bird still needs more
confirmation. He also mentioned seeing a GLAUCOUS GULL on the mud flat
just north of the boat ramp at Red Hill on Apr. 19.

Rob Fowler sent in his own report of the GLAUCOUS GULL at Red Hill on Apr.
19, He also saw 17 STILT SANDPIPERS south of the boat ramp at Red Hill, 3
ROSEATE SPOONBILL at the north end of McDonald Rd., noting they are
usually there around 6 p.m., 2 FRANKLIN’S GULLS in the same area, 40 STILT
SANDPIPERS at Red Hill, 1 OREGON JUNCO northeast of Calipatria the latest
date for the county, 1 MERLIN just north of Calipatria prison, and 20 BLUE
GROSBEAK seen during owl surveys.

Travis Cooper reported an adult male BLACK-CHINNED SPARROW in a drain next
to an ag field about ˝ mile north of I-8 between Dunaway and Jeffrey Rd.
south of Evan Hewes Hwy. The sighting was on Apr. 19, and GPS coordinates
can be found on the website. The next day, Travis again found the BLACK-
CHINNED SPARROW and said he had found at least two female-plumaged birds
in the area.

Bob Miller forwarded a report from the Salton Sea State Recreation Area
of 2 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS in the harbor at the boat launch at the park HQs
on Apr. 19.

In general, birds that are on this weekly summary are those that are
classified as at least rare in “Birds of Southern California” by Garrett
and Dunn, “Birds of the Salton Sea” by Patten, McCaskie, and Unitt, or
in “Birds of the Lower Colorado River Valley” by Rosenberg, Ohmart,
Hunter, and Anderson. Rarity can be regional or seasonal. For example, a
nuthatch reported at the Salton Sea, where it is rare, may be on the
summary. That same bird reported from the San Bernardino Mountains, where
it is common, would not be. A sparrow reported as a rarity in Riverside
in July, may be common there in December.
