RARE BIRD ALERT for LITTLE STINT.
Sightings for Wednesday, September 21, 2005
At the pilings near the foot of 96th Street on the shore of Boundary Bay,
Delta, a juvenile LITTLE STINT was well seen and photographed from
6 PM onward. It was with a flock of WESTERN SANDPIPERS,
SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, and other shorebirds. The stint may
have been there the previous evening as well, but was not
conclusively identified then.
The BAR-TAILED GODWIT was also seen on the Boundary Bay shoreline near
the foot of 104th Street.
On the Tsawwassen ferry jetty, also in Delta, a RUDDY TURNSTONE was seen
With 6 BLACK TURNSTONES at the lagoon on the north side.
In Vancouver, a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW was seen near 34th Avenue
and Pine Street.
Sightings for Tuesday, September 20, 2005
The BAR-TAILED GODWIT was still present along the Boundary Bay foreshore
East of 104th Street in Delta, as were several RED KNOTS.
Off the foot of Beecher Street in Crescent Beach, Surrey, a flock of
about 500 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS was accompanied by 2 AMERICAN
GOLDEN-PLOVERS, a PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER, 11 RED KNOTS,
a MARBLED GODWIT, and a few early DUNLIN.
At Surrey Lake Park, off 152nd Street in Surrey, were a GREEN HERON,
2 OSPREYS, 2 RING-NECKED DUCKS, 6 EURASIAN WIGEON, and
at least 200 AMERICAN PIPITS.
Near Downes Bowl Park in Abbotsford, 11 EVENING GROSBEAKS and a RED-
BREASTED SAPSUCKER were reported.
Sightings for Monday, September 19, 2005
At the Reifel Bird Sanctuary in Delta, a STILT SANDPIPER, a
WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, and two BLACK-CROWNED
NIGHT-HERONS were seen.
Sightings for Sunday, September 18, 2005
At the Reifel Bird Sanctuary, a RED-NAPED SAPSUCKER, very
rare in fall, was seen well along the east dyke trail. One STILT
SANDPIPER was also still at Reifel.
Near the foot of 96th Street on Boundary Bay in Delta, birds seen included
a BAR-TAILED GODWIT, 4 RED KNOTS, and 3 AMERICAN GOLDEN-
PLOVERS. At Iona Island in Richmond, 40 COMMON TERNS, 4 BLACK
OYSTERCATCHERS, and 6 RED-THROATED LOONS were seen off the
South Jetty.
At Point Roberts in Washington, birds seen included 5 TURKEY VULTURES
at Lily Point, a BARRED OWL on Tyee Drive not far from the border
crossing, and 3 RHINOCEROS AUKLETS and a BLACK
OYSTERCATCHER at Lighthouse Marine Park.
The wintering WILLET was present at the base of the Tsawwassen
Ferry jetty in Delta, on the south side.
A GREEN HERON was seen at the rowing pavilion at Burnaby Lake in
Burnaby.
About 40 BLACK SWIFTS and a few VAUX'S SWIFTS were seen near
104th Avenue and 144th Street in Surrey.
A SHARP-TAILED SANDPIPER was seen with yellowlegs and dowitchers
at the Nico Wynd Golf Course along the Nicomekl River in Surrey.
Sightings for Saturday, September 17, 2005
An AMERICAN BITTERN was seen in the tules next to the outer pond
at Iona Island in Richmond.
15 BLACK TURNSTONES were seen at Rocky Point Park in Port
Moody, an unusual location.
Two GREEN HERONS were seen at the "duck pond" in Colony Farm Park,
Port Coquitlam. Another GREEN HERON was seen near the Alouette River
crossing on Harris Road in Pitt Meadows, and a MOUNTAIN
BLUEBIRD was reported along Middleton Road in Pitt Meadows.
Sightings for Friday, September 16, 2005
Two SANDHILL CRANES were seen flying over the entrance to the Vancouver
landfill near the junction of 72nd Street and Burns Drive in Delta.
Six LAPLAND LONGSPURS were seen on the south jetty at Iona Island in
Richmond, and 16 RING-NECKED DUCKS were in the outer pond at Iona.
At the Tsawwassen ferry jetty in Delta were two BLACK OYSTERCATCHERS,
plus a WILLET at the jetty base. Birds seen along the Boundary Bay dyke
east of the foot of 64th Street in Delta included a COMMON NIGHTHAWK,
an AMERICAN KESTREL, and a WESTERN MEADOWLARK.
Sightings for Thursday, September 15, 2005
An ARCTIC TERN was seen at Blackie Spit in Surrey, and eventually flew
off toward the west..
The two WILLETS were still present on the beach in White Rock just east
of the White Rock pier.
A MARBLED GODWIT was present at the lagoon on the north side of the
Tsawwassen ferry jetty in Delta. Also there was a RUDDY TURNSTONE.
At Iona Island in Richmond, an early GYRFALCON was seen, flying east
along McDonald Slough between Iona and Sea Islands. Also at Iona, four
RING-NECKED DUCKS were in the outer pond, west of the sewage ponds.
In North Vancouver, a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW was at 1961
Berkley Road.
At Pitt Lake, east of Grant Narrows Regional Park, a SANDERLING was
seen on the flats on the lake side of the dyke, east of the viewing tower.
