Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for April 26th,
2007. This report covers the period from April 20th to April 26th, and will
be updated again on May 3rd..
A PROTHONOTARY WARBLER was found at Norman Bird Sanctuary in Middletown on
the 22nd. The warbler is being seen along the "Quarry" Trail. It frequents
the periphery of the small pond, and has been reported every day. Also, 1
RUBY-CROWNED KIGLET, 2 HOUSE WRENS and 1 WOOD THRUSH were observed.
In Newport on the 20th, 1 CASPIAN TERN was reported at the east end of
Easton's Beach. At Miantonomi Park, 1 YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER was reported on
the 22nd.
In Narraganset, 1 TRICOLORED HERON was observed flying over Iron Mine Cove
in point Judith Pond on the 20th.
A VIRGINIA RAIL was found in South Kingstown at Genessee Swamp, along the
South County bike trail.
On the 24th in Tiverton, around the farm ponds on Narrow Lane, 1 LITTLE
BLUE HERON and 1 PECTORAL SANDPIPER.
Another LITTLE BLUE HERON was reported at Succotash Marsh in Jerusalem on
the 26th.
At the eastern end of Green End Avenue in Middletown, 1 CATTLE EGRET was
found feeding on the farm with the Black Angus bulls on the 20th and the 22nd.
It was not found after the 22nd. Also in Middletown, in the farm pond on
Braman's Lane, 1 BLUE-WINGED TEAL.
On the 22nd, 2 PURPLE MARTINS returned to the colony at the Rhode Island
Country Club in Barrington. This large martin colony can be seen by walking
down the Barrington town beach and looking in the back in an open area just
after the swamp.
The first report of a RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD came from Hope Valley on the
23rd.
Two BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS were seen at Gilbert Stuart Birthplace in
Saunderstown on the 22nd.
An INDIGO BUNTING was seen at Point Judith on the 21st.
At Matunuck, 5 BLUE-WINGED TEAL and 3 LESSER YELLOWLEGS were seen in the wet
fields at Roy Carpenter's beach on the 21st.
At Arcadia Management Area in Exeter-West Greenwich, 2 PALM WARBLERS, 2
LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH and 1 PILEATED WOODPECKER were observed on the 21st.
On the 26th at the Charlestown Breachway, 5 WILLETS and 1 SEASIDE SPARROW
were reported.
At Jacob’s Point, on the Bristol/Warren line, on the 26th, 3 MARSH WRENS and
1 VIRGINIA RAIL.. All four birds were heard from the boardwalk.
Returning migrants this week included: BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBER,
BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, OVENBIRD and BLUE-HEADED VIREO.
