Of Special Note
This week marked the arrival in good numbers of RUBY-THROATED
HUMMINGBIRDS, ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS, and BALTIMORE ORIOLES, as well as
many warblers. First reports of species seen were numerous and included
SOLITARY SANDPIPER, BANK SWALLOW, LEAST FLYCATCHER, GREAT-CRESTED
FLYCATCHER, INDIGO BUNTING, WARBLING VIREO, PRAIRIE, and MAGNOLIA
WARBLERS, and WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW.
A BREWSTER'S WARBLER was seen near the University of New England Soccer
field in Portland on May 9. The bird was not relocated.
York County
A BLUE-WINGED WARBLER was seen in Berwick on May 7, followed by
GREAT-CRESTED FLYCATCHER, EASTERN KINGBIRD, and WARBLING VIREO on May 8
A BOBOLINK was singing in flight at the Wells Reserve on May 8.
Among the birds at the Sanford Sewer District on May 5 were 2 AMERICAN
KESTRELS, a female COOPER'S HAWK, 5-7 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, BANK, TREE,
NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED, and BARN SWALLOWS, and 2 BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHERS.
Birds in Kezar Falls included a WARBLING VIREO, YELLOW WARBLER, and
LEAST FLYCATCHER.
Greater Portland
Three NORTHERN SHOVELERS were seen on multiple days behind the Clambake
restaurant on the Pine Point Road in Scarborough. LEAST SANDPIPERS have
been seen from the back of the Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center. A
BALTIMORE ORIOLE was heard in the brush across from the center. Two
MUTE SWANS were in the Libby River in Scarborough Marsh on May 7. A
first report of WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS was received from Scarborough on
May 7.
Two LAUGHING GULLS were at Kettle Cove in Cape Elizabeth.
Twelve species of warbler, including 6+ BLACKBURNIAN WARBLERS were at
Hinckley Park in South Portland on May 9.
Eighteen species of warbler were seen at Evergreen Cemetery in Portland
including a LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH on May 6, an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER on
May 8, and a BLACKBURNIAN and BAY-BREASTED WARBLER on May 11. A
"BREWSTER'S" form of the BLUE-WINGED and GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER hybrid
was seen on May 9. Other highlights at Evergreen Cemetery in Portland
this past week included SPOTTED and SOLITARY SANDPIPER, GREEN HERON,
VEERY, WOOD THRUSH, SWAINSON'S THRUSH, YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, BLUE-GRAY
GNATCATCHER, and RUSTY BLACKBIRD.
A BROWN THRASHER was at the soccer field at University of New England in
Portland.
Two VIRGINIA RAILS, an AMERICAN BITTERN, and a GREEN HERON were seen at
Capisic Pond Park in Portland on May 7.
Two LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH are being heard on Hurricane Road just west of
Forest View Drive in Falmouth, one in the ravine on the south side of
Hurricane Road, the other on the east side of the power-line cut.
A RED-EYED VIREO was in Falmouth on May 9.
A RED-THROATED LOON in near-breeding plumage was seen in the Royal River
from Bayview Preserve on May 9.
The Bradbury Mounting Hawkwatch tallied 116 raptors from May 4 - May 9
including 22 OSPREY, 36 SHARP-SHINNED, 2 COOPER'S, 1 RED-SHOULDERED, 40
BROAD-WINGED and 1 RED-TAILED HAWK, 7 AMERICAN KESTREL, 5 MERLIN, and 2
unidentified raptors.
A CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER was in Windham on May 7.
A VARIED THRUSH was reported in Durham on May 5. The bird was not
relocated.
Midcoast
An INDIGO BUNTING was seen in a yard on Harding Road in Brunswick on May
9.
Two RAZORBILLS were seen from the ferry off Vinalhaven on May 6.
Four ATLANTIC PUFFINS, 200+ BLACK GUILLEMOTS, and 200+ LAUGHING GULLS
were seen on a trip around Eastern Egg Rock on May 5.
A RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER visited feeders in Warren on May 5. Other
species that were seen included RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD, BLUE-HEADED
VIREO, NORTHERN PARULA and PINE, YELLOW-RUMPED and BLACK-AND-WHITE
WARBLERS.
Lewiston-Auburn
Two BROWN THRASHERS were seen in Lewiston.
Buckfield birds included ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK, EASTERN TOWHEE,
BALTIMORE ORIOLE, RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD, and an OVENBIRD.
Kennebec Valley
A CAROLINA WREN was singing at the sand pit on Harrison Road in
Gardiner, while CHIMNEY SWIFTS were seen May 4.
At Vaughan Woods in Hallowell on May 4, a LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH was
present near the bridge along the lower Brook trail, singing
conspicuously from a perch above the brook and later about 1/4 mile
downstream.
Highlights at the Pine Tree State Arboretum in Augusta on May 8 were a
SORA, VIRGINIA RAIL, LEAST FLYCATCHER, WARBLING VIREO, followed on May 9
by 13 warbler species including CANADA WARBLER and AMERICAN REDSTART.
Also seen on May 9 were GREATER YELLOWLEGS, LEAST and GREAT-CRESTED
FLYCATCHERS, EASTERN KINGBIRD, BROWN THRASHER, ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK,
and BALTIMORE ORIOLE.
A male RUSTY BLACKBIRD was seen along Rt. 104 between Augusta and
Sidney.
Central Maine
ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS and BALTIMORE ORIOLES reached Skowhegan on May
9.
Birds in Dexter and Corinna included BARRED OWLS, EASTERN PHOEBE,
SAVANNAH SPARROW, HERMIT THRUSH, BLUE-HEADED VIREO, BACK-THROATED GREEN
WARBLER, OVENBIRD, NORTHERN PARULA, and NORTHERN FLICKERS.
Two UPLAND SANDPIPERS were seen in a field off Broadway in Bangor on May
4.
A YELLOW WARBLER reached Dexter on May 9.
One brightly colored AUDUBON'S YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER was found near the
ponds at Taylor Road in Orono on May 5, while 5 ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS
were hawking over the water.
Downeast Coast
Seen in Englishman's Bay near Roque Bluffs were WHITE-WINGED SCOTER,
SURF SCOTER, GREATER YELLOWLEGS, RED-BREASTED MERGANSER, COMMON EIDER,
BLACK GUILLEMOT, and a mature BALD EAGLE.
Other Roque Bluffs birds included RUFFED GROUSE, HERMIT THRUSH,
YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, CHIPPING SPARROW,
SAVANNAH SPARROW, WINTER WREN, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, and a MERLIN pair
at the top of a tall coniferous tree.
Migrants on Mt. Desert included 2 HERMIT THRUSH in Bar Harbor, NORTHERN
PARULA, NASHVILLE, YELLOW-RUMPED, BLACK-THROATED GREEN and PINE
WARBLERS, SONG, WHITE-THROATED and SWAMP SPARROWS, and 2 LAUGHING GULLS.
Washington County
RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRDS and PINE WARBLERS were reported in Alexander.
Western Maine Mountains
A BROWN THRASHER, AMERICAN BITTERN, BROWN CREEPER, BROAD-WINGED HAWK,
and the first OSPREY seen in several years were found in the area of the
two swamps in Dover-Foxcroft on May 5.
A ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK was in New Sharon.
Aroostook County
With the ice at Lake Josephine in Eaton breaking up, an impressive
number of ducks were present including a pair of RUDDY DUCKS, 2
REDHEADS, 2 NORTHERN PINTAILS, 16 GADWALL, and 34 AMERICAN WIGEON.
ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS reached New Sweden on May 9.
