Rare Bird Alert for Blackpoll Warbler and Swainson's Hawk

Friday, May 11
A female Blackpoll Warbler was reported from Mt. Tolmie today. Further
reports on this bird and photographs would be greatly appreciated.
A Swainson's Hawk was at Martindale Flats along with 3 Northern Harriers.
Also in the area was a Semipalmated Sandpiper among a flock of Least and
Western Sandpipers,
Nearby, at Livesay and Welch Road, was a Bullock's Oriole. There is
possibly a second Oriole in the area as well.
A VNHS field trip to Viaduct Flats, Broadcast Hill and Quick's Bottom turned
up a good variety of birds, including 2 Cinnamon Teal, 4 Western Tanagers
and 6 Purple Martins.
Thursday, May 10
A Western Kingbird was in the Garry Oaks on the south slope of Mt. Doug.
Mt. Tolmie was a hot spot for birds including several species of warblers,
Warbling Vireos, Western Tanagers, and a Hermit Thrush.
Wednesday, May 9
A male Yellow-headed Blackbird was seen near the golf driving range on
Beverley St in Duncan.
Two Lincoln's Sparrows, a Band-tailed Pigeon and one or two Western Wood
Pewees were on Mt Tolmie this morning.
At Maber Flats, a Solitary Sandpiper was among many shorebirds including 28
Short-billed Dowitchers and a Lesser Yellowlegs.
26 Whimbrel and a Godwit continued on the Victoria Golf Course.
Tuesday, May 8
A Nashville Warbler was located at around 8:15 am at Viaduct Flats. It was
moving about the area along the main trail between the water and the
Vancouver Island Technical Centre, near the junction of the Birders' Loop
and the East-West Regional trail on the southeast side of the flats, away
from Interurban Rd. Further reports and photographs of this bird would be
appreciated.
Two Western Kingbirds were photographed in the William Head/Lombardy Rd area
of Metchosin.
A Western Wood-Pewee and an Olive-sided Flycatcher, Townsend Solitaire,
Warbling Vireo, Varied Thrush and Hermit Thrush were on Observatory Hill.
A Solitary Sandpiper was with 20 Least Sandpipers in the remaining standing
water at Hastings Flats, near the mailbox on Granville.
49 Long-billed Dowitchers were reported from Boys Road in Duncan.
Western Tanagers were reported near Playfair Park in Saanich and Viaduct
Flats.
Monday, May 7
22 Caspian Terns were at Esquimalt Lagoon. There was some evidence that they
may be breeding in the area. Birders are asked to report any nests of this
species. Also there were about 60 Dowitchers.
A call from the cruise ship Norwegian Sun reported 4 Brown Pelicans in
Blackney Pass, which is about 6 miles NW of Robson Bight on northern
Vancouver Island.
A Green Heron was found at Blenkinsop Lake. Also there was a Black-headed
Grosbeak.
In the Swan Lake area, there were two Vaux's Swifts, a Northern Harrier and
an Osprey.
Two Vaux's Swifts were seen over Ladysmith.
