Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for May 10th,
2007. This report covers the period from May 4th, to May 10th, and will be
updated again on May 17th.
Two warbler species common in the southern states but rare here were spotted
this week. A YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER was found in West Kingston on the 8th.
It was seen along the South County Bike Path, near where it crosses Liberty
Lane. At Swan Point Cemetery on the 7th and 8th, the season's second
PROTHONOTARY WARBLER was observed. Also seen on the 8th at Swan Point was a HOODED
WARBLER.
A SUMMER TANAGER was found on Block Island on the 7th. Other birds that day
included: 1 SOTITARY SANDPIPER, 1 MERLIN, 3 INDIGO BUNTINGS and 2 AMERICAN
OYSTERCATCHERS .
On the 4th, 1 UPLAND SANDPIPER was discovered in the south fields along
Weeden Lane in Jamestown. The bird was seen again the next day. On the 5th, 4
CATTLE EGRET were seen there along with a BOBOLINK.
At Potter Wood in Kingston, 1 BARRED OWL and a HOODED WARBLER were seen last
week.
At Miantonomi Park in Newport on the 5th, 1 WORM-EATING WARBLER and 1
SCARLET TANAGER, and on the 10th, 1 YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO was reported.
A CLIFF SWALLOW was reported from Napatree Point on the 4th. Other
sightings from Napatree this week: 13 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, 2 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS,
7 PIPING PLOVERS, 1 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER, 3 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS, 8 RUDDY
TURNSTONES, 3 SANDERLING, 143 DUNLIN and 5 COMMON TERNS.
On the 5th at Chase Farm in Lincoln, 1 PILEATED WOODPECKER was seen.
At Ninigret Park in Charlestown on the 7th, 2 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS, 1
ORCHARD ORIOLE and 3 BROWN THRASHERS were observed.
Several times this past week at Trustom Pond NWR, a BLUE-WINGED x
GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER hybrid was seen, and on the 8th, 1 GRAY CHEEKED THRUSH was found
along the beginning of the Osprey Point Trail.
On the 10th, a SORA was vocalizing at Jacob’s Point Marsh in Warren.
A CASPIAN TERN was found at the Charlestown Breachway this past week.
At Quonochontaug at the end of West Beach Road, 3 SALTMARSH SHARP-TAILED
SPARROWS and 2 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS were reported on the 10th.
A YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was found at Brewer Sakonnet Marina on the
10th.
In Tiverton on the 9th, 1 LITTLE BLUE HERON was reported at Audubon's Reuker
Wildlife Management Area.
At Great Swamp Management Area: 5 BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHERS, 1 YELLOW-THROATED
VIREO, 2 CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLERS, 1 HOODED WARBLER, 2 AMERICAN REDSTARTS, 1
PRAIRE WARBLER, 2 BLUE-WINGED WARBLERS, 2 WOOD DUCKS, 8 SWAMP SPARROWS, 3 GREAT
CRESTED FLYCATCHERS, 4 PURPLE MARTINS and 1 SPOTTED SANDPIPER.
Finally, a BLUE GROSBEAK visited a feeder for a few days last week at a
private feeder in Little Compton.
