This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon Society for
Thursday May 10, 2007 with reports of PURPLE GALLINULE, CRESTED
CARACARA, CURLEW SANDPIPER, seasonal and local reports of interest,
and announcements.
.
The adult PURPLE GALLINULE originally found Apr 20 at Wreck Pond was
seen again May 9. The bird was frequenting the phragmites between
the gray house and Wreck Pond at the corner of Brown and 2nd Aves in
Spring Lake. Patience may be required to view this bird as it
apparently disappears for periods of time into the vegetation.

A CRESTED CARACARA appeared briefly at Sandy Hook May 5 - no reports
since. A first-cycle ICELAND GULL was on the beach off Fee Plaza May
6. A juvenile NORTHERN GOSHAWK flew past the north pond observation
deck May 10. A BARRED OWL was heard calling near the scout camp May
5 and up to 6 WHIP-POOR-WILLS were heard this week. Landbird
migrants noted at the hook this week included BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO, 20
species of warblers including CAPE MAY WARBLER, BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER,
WORM-EATING WARBLER, and up to 3 HOODED WARBLERS, and an adult male
SUMMER TANAGER near the garden May 10. A free, detailed birding map

A CURLEW SANDPIPER was observed at the Heislerville impoundment in
Cumberland County May 9 - please call the CMBO Hotline for details.

Reports from Old Mine Road and the Delaware Water Gap NRA May 4-6
included an OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER at the Dunfield Creek parking lot
May 6, several LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH, HOODED WARBLER, and WORM-EATING
WARBLER, 3 CERULEAN WARBLERS south of Van Campens Inn, and 2 YELLOW-
THROATED WARBLERS at Watergate. Near Walpack Valley 2 GOLDEN-WINGED
WARBLERS were noted at Kittatinny Camp and a YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER
was found at Flatbrook-Roy WMA.

At Hyper Humus marsh, the KING RAIL was heard May 9 between ponds #4
and #5.
.
A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was noted at Trout Brook WMA along Owassa Rd
in Sussex County May 5.

North Hudson Park in Hudson County hosted SWAINSON’S THRUSH, GRAY-
CHEEKED THRUSH, 13 species of warbler including CANADA WARBLER, and a
SUMMER TANAGER May 6.

Garret Mountain reports this week included BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO, 38
HERMIT THRUSHES, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER and CAPE MAY WARBLER May 8, 2
WORM-EATING WARBLERS, HOODED WARBLER, and a "BREWSTER'S" WARBLER.

Celery Farm sightings this week included LITTLE BLUE HERON, COMMON
MOORHEN, HOODED WARBLER and CANADA WARBLER.

A KENTUCKY WARBLER was found at South Mountain Reservation May along
Mayapple Hill Rd May 9.

Great Swamp NWR continues to host an AMERICAN BITTERN at the end of
Pleasant Plains Rd along with LINCOLN'S SPARROW and WHITE-CROWNED
SPARROW May 5. A LITTLE BLUE HERON was noted at the Headquarters
Pond the same day.

Hunterdon County reports this week included a belated LAUGHING GULL
at Spruce Run Reservoir May 1, 13 COMMON TERNS And a lingering HORNED
GREBE through May 4. Lingering waterbirds at Round Valley
Reservoir’s bathing beach through May 5 were 2 LESSER SCAUP, RING-
NECKED DUCK, RED-BREASTED MERGANSER, and COMMON LOON. The hybrid
Clay-colored X Field Sparrow along the causeway at Round Valley was
last reported May 2.
