HIGHLIGHTS

Harlequin Duck, Cattle Egret, Gull-billed Tern, Caspian Tern, Chuck-
will's-widow, Prothonotary Warbler, Hooded Warbler, Blue Grosbeak,
Rusty Blackbird.

Fairly sizable flights were noted on several occasions in the last
week, particularly on the morning of May 2. On that date many
warblers appeared, but so too did numerous White-throated Sparrows
and Rose-breasted Grosbeaks. Solitary Sandpiper has been widely
reported this spring, and numerous reports of multiple individuals
are highlighted below. Blue-winged Teal has been giving a good
showing this spring, and several reports were received this week.
Other migrants reported by several observers include Greater & Lesser
Yellowlegs, Willet, Ruby-throated Hummingbird (particularly on May
1), Eastern Kingbird, Brown Thrasher, Hermit Thrush, Blue-gray
Gnatcatcher, Myrtle Warbler, Palm Warbler, Black and White Warbler,
Chipping Sparrow, and Baltimore Oriole.

For the record, a SOOTY TERN (first reported in last week's East End
Birds) was found dead on a golf course in Westhampton on Apr 16 (the
second day of the storm). I have seen pictures of the dead bird and
hope to put them up on my website soon.

THE REST OF THE FLOCK

At Pike's Beach in Westhampton Dunes, a MERLIN was seen to be eating
a PIPING PLOVER on Apr 26 (BDP). Couldn't they stick to Starlings,
Song Sparrows or Sanderlings?

In Quogue a CHUCK-WILL'S-WIDOW was singing on Jessups Ave south of
the Quogue Wildlife Refuge on May 2 (RA). What was presumably the
same bird was also present in 2006.

An adult male BLUE GROSBEAK was a one-day wonder at a North Sea
feeder (EF).

A GULL-BILLED TERN was on the Mecox flat early on Apr 28 (HM) and
then later presumably the same individual was at the end of Horsemill
Lane (K&BRu). Three CASPIAN TERNS were on the flat on Apr 28 (the

feeding there daily, with a high count of 75 on Apr 30 (JTA). Also
present in the flooded field are 3 WILSON'S SNIPES, which were still
present May 4, and a drake BLUE-WINGED TEAL (JTA). A male ORCHARD
ORIOLE was singing by the museum entrance on Apr 30 (HM, JTA). At the
small pond at the Bridgehampton Golf Course at the intersection of

fence on Daniel's Hole Rd on May 4 (HM). The bird was first seen
along the fence on the northeast side of the airport, but
subsequently was spotted in the back right corner of the "runway
field" on the east side of the road. Perhaps it'll find a mate and
stay for a while.

The three HARLEQUIN DUCKS were still present at the end of Fireplace
Rd in Springs on Apr 28, 29, May 3, 4. At nearby Merrill Lake there
were 4 SOLITARY SANDPIPERS on Apr 28 (K&BRu, AW).
