This is the Wednesday, May 9, 2007 Missouri Rare Bird
Alert, a statewide service of the Audubon Society of
Missouri, serving the birding community of Missouri
since 1901. The bird alert is compiled from reports
submitted by ASM members and other birders throughout
the state.

** NOTE: The report includes birds that are listed as
rare, casual, or accidental on the 2003 Annotated
Checklist of Missouri Birds (with revisions in 2004
and 2005). Species that appear in ALL CAPS in the
“Species Mentioned” section are listed as “casual” or
“accidental” and thus require documentation. (Note
that some birds may be considered rare only during a
particular season or in a particular part of the

KANSAS CITY AREA

On Thursday, May 3, Ron Barry found an adult male
LAZULI BUNTING at Martha Lafite Nature Sanctuary (Clay
Co.). The bird was being observed perched in trees
near the feeder stations at the nature center. The
last reported sighting was Monday, May 7. For

At Weston Bend SP (Platte Co.) on Saturday, May 5,
Chris Hobbs and Mark Robbins, recorded 3 male HOODED
WARBLERS. Two of the HOODED WARBLERS were near the
Missouri River overlook and the other was at the
beginning of the loop.

On Monday, May 7, Doug Willis observed reported a
LAUGHING GULL at Smithville Lake (Clay Co.). The bird
was observed out in front of the boat slips at the
Little Platte Marina. Doug reported seeing the bird
again on Wednesday, May 9. This time the bird was
observed flying between the Little Platte Marina and
the Camp Branch arm of the lake. Additionally on May
9, Doug found a male BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER in a
mature woods patch near the town of Trimble, on the
northwest side of Smithville Lake (Clinton Co.).

On Tuesday, May 8, Kyle Driggers observed a single
PHILADELPHIA VIREO at Cooley Lake CA (Clay Co.). On
Wednesday, May 9, Bob Fisher reported seeing 2
YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHERS at Cooley Lake CA.

At Watkins Mill SP (Clay Co.) Kristi Mayo had great
looks at a single VEERY along the east side of the
paved trail on Friday, May 4.


NORTHEAST

On Saturday, May 5, Phil Wire observed a single
PEREGRINE FALCON flying over the east side of Union
Ridge CA (Adair Co.). Additionally, Phil reported
seeing a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW, as many as 15 singing
HENSLOW’S SPARROWS, and a single HARRIS’S SPARROW
mixed in with White-crowned Sparrows.

Steve Kinder reported that as of Saturday, May 5, a
pair of SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHERS had returned a few
miles south of Chillicothe (Livingston Co.).

A female SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER was found by Myrna
Carlton on Monday, May 7, along Hwy U, northwest of
Chillicothe (Livingston Co.).

Also on Monday, May 7, Phil Wire reported the
HENSLOW’S SPARROW (he first reported on Tuesday, May
1) was still calling near the parking lot at Big Creek
CA (Adair Co.).


NORTHWEST

At Bluffwoods CA (Buchanan Co.) on Friday, May 4,
Peter Kondrashov found a single male BLUE-WINGED
WARBLER along the handicapped trail.

On Saturday, May 5, Joe Eades and Joshua Uffman
observed a single PEREGRINE FALCON near Mallard Marsh
at Squaw Creek NWR (Holt Co.). As of Tuesday, May 8,
the 2 SANDHILL CRANES were still present at Squaw
Creek NWR. It should be noted that access to Squaw
Creek NWR may be very limited for the next few weeks
as a result of the recent flooding.

A Bunting, possibly a first year LAZULI BUNTING, but
could possibly be a hybrid LAZULI x INDIGO is present
at the Wright’s feeder in Atchison Co. as of Tuesday,
May 8. Observers interested in seeing this bird
should contact the Evonne Wright at 660-686-2776.


SOUTHEAST

On Friday, May 4, Bob Lewis and Steve Dilks found 3
LAUGHING GULLS on the third lake at Otter Slough CA
(Stoddard Co.). Also at Otter Slough CA, they
observed a single AMERICAN AVOCET. The AMERICAN
AVOCET was still present on Saturday, May 5.

Bob and Steve also observed SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHERS
near the town of Fisk (Butler Co.) on Friday, May 4.

On Saturday, May 5, Steve Dilks and Bill Reeves
observed a WHIMBREL and 3 MARBLED GODWITS at a shallow
pool along Hwy CC (Stoddard Co.), about three miles
south of the junction of Hwy’s 114 and CC.

Bill and Steve also observed a single WILLET at the
mudflat just before entering the big pool at Duck
Creek CA (Bollinger/Stoddard Co’s.) on Saturday, May
5.


ST. LOUIS AREA

On Sunday, May 6, Laura Montgomery observed a pair of
CINNAMON TEAL among a group of Blue-winged Teal at the
King’s Lake Unit of BK Leach CA (Lincoln Co.). These
birds were observed on the north side of Hwy M, about
mid-way between Norton Woods Road and the entrance to
the original BK Leach CA unit.


COLUMBIA/CENTRAL

At Eagle Bluffs CA (Boone Co.) at least one PEREGRINE
FALCON continued to be seen as of Sunday, May 6, when
observed by Mike Doyen, Edge Wade, and Louis
Wilkensen.


WEST CENTRAL

Neal Young reported a VEERY and a HOODED WARBLER were
present at Pertle Springs Park (Johnson Co.) the
weekend of May 5 and 6.
