Welcome to the City of Calgary and the CFNS Bird Alert. This Bird Alert
was recorded on Wednesday, May 9, at 10:45 am. To report a bird

There have been 2 WHITE-FACED IBIS reported in our birding area this
week. Eric Tull observed a single bird east of Keoma and south of
Irricana on Saturday, May 5. The bird was at a couple of small ponds on
RgeRd 265 approx 1 mile north of TwpRd 260 (about 3.2 km west of Bruce
Lake). An unidentified observer reported a WHITE-FACED IBIS had arrived
at Frank Lake, 6 km east of High River on Hwy 23, on Wednesday, May 9.

Shorebirds reported recently included 2 DUNLIN seen by Eric Tull and a
CFNS field trip on Sunday, May 6, at the ponds on RgeRd 265 north of
TwpRd 260, and 8 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS were seen by Lois and Bill Lang
at Sadler's Slough, just north of the Hwy 1 & Hwy 24 junction, on
Friday, May 4. This is an unusually large number of birds of this
species to be seen in our area. 8 HUDSONIAN GODWITS were seen at the
ponds on RgeRd 265 north of TwpRd 260 last week. BAIRD'S, PECTORAL and
SOLITARY SANDPIPERS have all been reported in the Calgary area recently,
and on Saturday, May 5, Eric Tull observed 40 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS and
10 WILSON'S PHALAROPES at sloughs on RgeRd 254 just south of TwpRd 273,
east of Irricana. Joan and Malcolm McDonald had seen the first WILSON'S
PHALAROPE of the season on Sunday, Apr 29, at a slough on Hwy 564 just
west of the turn south to Conrich. On Sunday, May 6, Eric Tull and the
CFNS field trip saw 100 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS and 20 LONG-BILLED
DOWITCHERS at the ponds on RgeRd 265 north of TwpRd 260.

Jim Davis reported 2 WESTERN WOOD=PEWEES near the Douglasglen Siltation
Ponds in Calgary on Monday, May 7; and Eric Tull watched a LOGGERHEAD
SHRIKE east of Irricana on May 5. The Siltation Ponds are along the Bow
River just north of the Deerfoot Tr Bridge into Douglasglen. Jim Davis
also saw a female HARLEQUIN DUCK there on May 7, while the same day
Jason Rogers and a field trip saw a ROSS'S GOOSE on an outing to the
Banff Cave & Basin. The group also saw VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOWS there,
while BROWN-HEADED COWBIRDS were seen east of Calgary on May 5 by Eric
Tull. Eric also saw a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK in the Irricana area on May 5.

A 1st or 2nd year KUMLIN'S GULL seen by Terry Korolyk on Saturday, Apr
28, was at the pond at the Browning Ferris landfill on 194 Ave SE
east of Hwy 2.

The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is Monday, May 14.


BIRD STUDY GROUP - Meets the 1st Wednesday of the month, September - May
at 7:30 pm, Room 211, BioSciences Bldg, University of Calgary. The next
meeting will be on September 5. In June, July & August, meetings are
replaced with birding field trips.
