Welcome to Pennsylvania Audubon's and the Patriot-News' Birdline. This
Birdline covers sightings made primarily during the week prior to
Thursday, May 10, 2007.
ADAMS COUNTY:
A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was seen at the Siefken's property on May 6
(DSi, RSi).
BEDFORD/SOMERSET COUNTY:
Allegheny Front Hawk Watch reported counting 1 BLACK VULTURE, 20 OSPREY,
2 BALD EAGLE, 1 NORTHERN HARRIER, 9 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 13 COOPER'S
HAWKS, 11 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, 12 RED-TAILED HAWKS and 1 GOLDEN EAGLE
between May 3 and 7 (EG, JRo, GF, NF, MMc, BS, EH).
CENTRE COUNTY:
A juvenile BALD EAGLE and a calling SORA were at Millbrook Marsh on the
evening of May 2 (NB).
CUMBERLAND COUNTY:
State Game Lands 169 yielded SORA, 2 WILSON'S SNIPE and 2 RED-HEADED
WOODPECKERS on May 2 (DC, LC).
DAUPHIN COUNTY:
The previously reported PROTHONOTARY WARBLER at Wildwood Lake Nature
Preserve in northern Harrisburg continued to be observed through at
least May 4 (AS). A SORA was seen at Wildwood Lake on May 5 (RM).
An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was found at State Game Lands 246 on May 4
(RK, JR).
A YELLOW-BILLED LOON was seen with 3 COMMON LOONS in the Susquehanna
River on May 4 from Routes 11/15 between the Harvey Taylor Bridge and
West Fairview Boat Lauch (CR). It was seen later that evening on May 4
just north of the Wade Bridge (first bridge south of the West Fairview
Boat Launch)(RK). It was still present between May 5 and the early
morning of May 7 in the same general area (DW, AK, LU, CR, JH, DK, CK,
EP, TP, AT, DD, JD, DWe, SS, KG, Asa, TJ, TL, DB, LLH, EW, DH). There is
a report that the YELLOW-THROATED LOON was seen taking off after 6 AM on
May 7, and it flew north over the I-81 bridge along the Susquehanna
River (BM). It has not been seen near the Harvey Taylor Bridge since the
early morning of May 7 (LU, DH).
A GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER (where the paved Stony Creek Road becomes a dirt
road [Elizabeth Furnace area?]) and 1 BREWSTER'S WARBLER (at the power
line along Hahn Road) were found in Stony Creek Valley on May 5 (TS,
CR).
A GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER was found in Weiser State Forest on May 7 (DH).
State Game Lands 246 produced a SUMMER TANAGER on the morning of May 9
(DH, ASt).
JUNIATA COUNTY:
A GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER was seen along Mountain Road near the clear cut
behind Oakland Mills on May 7 (CK, AT).
LANCASTER COUNTY:
An OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER was seen at an unspecified location in the
county on May 2 (AO).
The BALD EAGLE chick in the Holtwood Tailrace nest is now large enough
to be observed being fed by its parents. It was fed a large fish
(probably a Gizzard Shad) on May 3 (CC).
There were 2 male BLUE GROSBEAKS in the Ash Basin #2 on May 5 (JS).
BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERONS were observed behind Ephrata Hospital on May
5 (JM).
There were 2 PROTHONOTARY WARBLERS and 2 YELLOW-THROATED WARBLERS at
Conoy Canal Park near Falmouth on May 7 (DH).
A walk along Pumping Station Road from its intersection with Route 322
on May 9 found 1 BLUE GROSBEAK (CC).
LUZERNE COUNTY:
An EARED GREBE was observed in the Susquehanna River from Kirby Park on
May 3 (JD).
MIFFLIN COUNTY:
A GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER was found along Licking Creek Road above
Mattawana on May 5 (MK, JDu).
SCHUYKILL/BERKS COUNTY:
Hawk Mountain reported counting 5 OSPREY, 1 BALD EAGLE, 1 NORTHERN
HARRIER, 4 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 2 COOPER'S HAWKS, 1 RED-SHOULDERED HAWK,
8 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, 9 RED-TAILED HAWKS and 2 AMERICAN KESTRELS between
May 3 and 9 (LG).
WYOMING COUNTY:
A male PAINTED BUNTING is visiting a feeder at a private residence in
Meshoppen through at least May 6 (JSk). Unfortunately, the private
residence is not open to visitors at this time (JSk).
YORK COUNTY:
A LITTLE BLUE HERON was observed on May 3 at the PPL wetlands project at
Brunner's Island (LC, DC).
A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was observed catching insects on the Defense
Distribution Center grounds (not open to the public) on May 8 (SW).
