In Sandoval County:
On April 8 CW and BT at Cochiti Lake had three LONG-BILLED CURLEWS, and five
FRANKLIN'S GULLS.
WW on April 4 took NM 126 north of La Cueva in the Jemez and had a
THREE-TOED WOODPECKER female on a dead tree at 22.7 miles with a GOSHAWK on a snag at
35.7 miles.
In Santa Fe County:
JB reports that BW on March 29-30 had a singing CAROLINA WREN in Santa Fe.
JB got it on April 3. It is in a closed area for parking at the State
Library compound, so one should park on Don Gaspar and walk to DeVargas. The song
is easily heard. Do not drive into the state parking area. RE had it on
April 5, JP and WW on April 7, CW and BT on April 8, BV on April 15 . The area
is south of the Supreme Court and north of the round capitol.
In Colfax County:
On April 11 DC saw a LEWIS'S WOODPECKER and two BLUE JAYS at the clubhouse
of the Raton Country Club. Another Lewis's was at the jct. of NM 72 and 526
at Raton.
East of Maxwell on NM 193 and A7 DC found five MOUNTAIN PLOVERS and two
LONG-BILLED CURLEWS on April 10.
DC on April 3 at Stubblefield Lake saw the female LONG-TAILED DUCK still
present. On April 14 he reported that both females are still present with two
HORNED GREBES, a pair of RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS, and a raft of about 250
FRANKLIN'S GULLS.
There was only one BARN OWL at the roost in the thicket near the 't' with
Hwys. A5 and A1 on April 4, but he found a roost with eight LONG-EARED OWLS on
private property a couple of miles out of the refuge.
In Bernalillo County:
BV at the -Tramway Wetlands had two AVOCETS and LEAST SANDPIPERS on April 15.
JO reports that RV saw a possible VAUX'S SWIFT while jogging on the bike
trail a mile north of the Montaņ0 Bridge on April 12 at mile post 5.
BS photographed an EARED GREBE on the southern-most pond at Tingley Beach in
Albuquerque on April 13.
JP on March 25 had a THREE-TOED WOODPECKER on the path from the Crest
parking lot near the Kiwanis Meadow.
In Valencia County:
At the marsh behind the Taco Bell in Belen CW and BT on April 5 saw a
WILSON'S PHALAROPE and 40 BLACK-NECKED STILTS.
PB o A;rl 11 had an OSPREY in the Rio Communaties area near Belen at a large
mobile home park and had a flock of over 50 CEDAR WAXWINGS.
In Torrance County:
BH on April 8 while checking on the Laguna del Perro saline ponds near
Willard found they have mostly dried up. He had a FRANKLIN'S GULL two miles north
of Estancia, four COMMON GRACKLES at the lake in Estancia'S park, a
PIED-BILLED GREBE and 18 SHOVELERS at the Mountainair sewage ponds, and six
SWAINSON'S HAWKS in the area.
In Socorro County:
At Bosque del Apache Refuge near San Antonio MR, GS, and SF on April 7 saw
LEAST SANDPIPERS and WILSON'S PHALAROPES. GP and CB on April 8 found a GLOSSY
IBIS at the refuge with FRANKLIN'S and BONAPARTE'S GULLS. CB also saw two
WESTERN KINGBIRDS. JB saw the ibis on April 9.

In Chaves County:
JH on Bitter Lake Refuge on April 12 reported SNOWY PLOVERS are arriving
seen with a mixed flock of over 250 shorebirds. There were good numbers of
EARED GREBES on Units 5, 15, and 16. On April 12 there was an OSPREY on Unit 16,
six FRANKLIN'S GULLS on Units 6 and 16, two first winter BONAPARTE'S GULLS
on Unit 3, a SNIPE at Hunter Marsh, and a late FERRUGINOUS HAWK. MR and SF on
April 1 had singing CASSIN'S SPARROWS. On April 7 RW and group had a
BURROWING OWL.
JP, WW, and LL had a good LESSER PRAIRIE CHICKEN show with 22 present on
March 17 north of the Waldrop Road Rest (40 miles east of Roswell) on the
Mescalero Sands. JSc in the afternoon saw 23 prancing on April 3 and the RW group
had them April 7 (also in the afternoon).
In Sierra County:
At the marsh at Las Palomas on April 7 CL saw a DOWNY WOODPECKER, CASSIN'S
VIREO, and a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW.
On Animas Creek near Caballo Lake JE on March 31 found a ZONE-TAILED HAWK
and two BRIDLED TITMICE.
At Emory Pass in the Black Range on the county line with Grant County JP and
WW on March 30 had OLIVE WARBLER and HUTTON'S VIREO.
In Grant County:
RS, DMZ, and DB had a GRAY FLYCATCHER in Steeple Rock Canyon on April 4.
On Gold Gulch Road on Jack's Peak in the Burro Mts. on April 7 a ZONE-TAILED
HAWK, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES, and RED CROSSBILLS were seen on April 7.
JBi had more crossbills in the Pinos Altos Mts. at Sheep Corral Canyon on
April 8.
On San Vicente Creek in Silver City on April 8 DB had a MERLIN and a BRIDLED
TITMOUSE.
EW had a calling POORWILL near her home on the Gila River on April 3.
DMZ had a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW in their yard on April 3.
Ro S had a MYRTLE WARBLER on April 14 at the Gila Bird Area near Cliff.
At Redrock on March 30 JP and WW had the BLACK HAWK. CW and BT on April 6
found a ZONE-TAILED HAWK.
At the Cherry Creek Campground north of Pinos Altos CW and BT on April 8 had
an OLIVE WARBLER.
JDM at her home at Roberts Lake had a male MAGNIFICENT HUMMINGBIRD arrive
March 22.
In Hidalgo County:
JB on April 7 saw a ZONE-TAILED HAWK at Dunagan's Crossing and another in
Clanton Canyon with a BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER.
JB found signs of quite a flood in Guadalupe Canyon with debris in the trees
up to eight feet. He reported another ZONE-TAIL HAWK, at the ranch a GRAY
HAWK and a GREAT BLUE HERON, with a male COSTA'S HUMMINGBIRD seen.
On April 8 KS found over 200 LARK BUNTINGS at mile marker 16 south of I-10
to Hachita.
At Virden JP and WW on March 31 saw two BLACK HAWKS, a ZONE-TAILED HAWK, a
LEWIS'S WOODPECKER, and a calling HOODED ORIOLE.
In Clanton Canyon on March 31 they saw three WESTERN SCREECH-OWLS, a
WHISKERED OWL, an ELF OWL, and several HUTTON'S VIREOS.
County Hwy. 1 south of Animas crosses the Diamond A (Gray) Ranch. Because
of events with thoughtless birders, one must not go off the road.
In Luna County:
LM reports that Katfish Kove is no longer open to birders.
In Doņa Ana County:
This county is buzzing with birds and active birders!
Prime birding spot is the Corralitos plays west of Las Cruces. It is to be
strongly emphasized that one must ask for permission at the ranch before
birding there. Migrants vary daily. JZ and MS on April 12 had a RED-NECKED
PHALAROPE there. On April 13 CL and DG reported a MERLIN, four LONG-BILLED
CURLEWS, a dark morph SWAINSON'S HAWK, and a CASSIN'S SPARROW. JN ON April 14
found the sparrows, a GREEN HERON, and a MARBLED GODWIT. JZ and MS got the
godwit later in the day with a PEREGRINE FALCON on the entrance road.
On the Border Patrol playa on I-10 west of Las Cruces CL and DG found on
April 13 two CALIFORNIA GULLS.
JN on April 14 found an adult SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER in Mesilla Park at
the corner of University and NM 28. It was seen by JZ and MS later in the
day. JN saw an AMERICAN GOLDFINCH and two MYRTLE WARBLERS at McDowell and
Conway. JZ and MS on April 11 had two CEDAR WAXWINGS in Mesilla Park. JN on Snow
Road had an EASTERN BLUEBIRD and near his Mesilla home there was a LESSER
YELLOWLEGS.
CL found an OSPREY at Burn Lake on April 13.
JZ and MS had two GREATER and LESSER YELLOWLEGS and 25 LONG-BILLED
DOWITCHERS at the Tarahumara Polo Field on April 11. DA on April 12 saw four
WHIMBRELS and three LONG-BILLED CURLEWS there.
JZ and MS in an flooded alfalfa field off Haas Road just north of the
Gadsden High School 30 WHITE-FACED IBIS, five LONG-BILLED CURLEWS, and a WILLET on
April 11. On April 12 MS and JZ had a GLOSSY IBIS with 75 WHITE-FACED IBIS
in an alfalfa field off Vado Road (Vado Exit). CL did not re-find it.
CL had the AMERICAN BITTERN at the Mesilla Bosque Park on March 31. JN on
April 14 at the park found two SORAS, SWAMP SPARROWS, two fly-by NEOTROPIC
CORMORANTS, another MYRTLE WARBLER.
On April 7 CL had two BELL'S VIREOS at Leasburg Dam State Park. JZ and MS
found it on April 11.
JZ and MS had a HOODED ORIOLE at their home near Radium Springs on April 4,
with a YELLOW WARBLER present April 9 and a NASHVILLE WARBLER on April 14.
At the Mesilla Valley Park KS saw the BITTERN on April 2. JZ and MS got it
on April 2 at the North Pond.
CL on April 1 on the Pine Tree Trail at Aguirre State Park had two HUTTON'S
VIREOS. RW got a CRISSAL THRASHER at the turn-off to the park on April 7.
HW had seven CATTLE EGRETS some in breeding plumage on Mesquite Road near La
Mesa on April 12.
In Otero County:
RW on April 7 had over five pairs of SNOWY PLOVERS at the Holloman Lakes.
At the Holloman Lakes near Alamogordo the "no access" signs are for hunters
only. The entire shore is open to birding. A board has been installed for
birders to list their sightings.
In Eddy County:
At Avalon Lake near Carlsbad SW on April 12 saw a WHIMBREL and two AMERICAN
GOLDEN-PLOVERS.+
SW found CLIFF and CAVE SWALLOWS at an apparent new nesting site on US 295
1.1 miles north of the road to Sitting Bull Falls under a culvert.

Central Audubon in Albuquerque has Thursday field trips. For details call
Margaret Wallen at 341-0928. Check as there may be a last minute change in
plans. On April 19 they go to Bosque del Apache Refuge with Mary Lou Arthur
(299-2565); and on April 26 a hike in Otero Canyon with Rebecca Gracey
(242-3821).
The Bird Migration Sensation at Percha Dam State Park (which includes
Caballo and Elephant Butte Lakes) will be April 20-21.
There will be a birding breakfast, identification bird hikes. Contact is

On April 21 Southwestern Audubon will go down Separ Road for early migrants.
