In Sandoval County:
DCa reported 20 WHITE-FACED IBIS at a flooded area in San Ysidro on April 15
just off NM 4.
WW on April 4 took NM 126 north of La Cueva in the Jemez and had a
THREE-TOED WOODPECKER female on a dead tree at 22.7 miles.
In Taos County:
SH had his first BROAD-TAILED HUMMINGBIRD in Taos on April 16.
In Santa Fe County:
BW on March 29-30 had a singing CAROLINA WREN in Santa Fe. JB got it on
April 3. It is in a closed area for parking at the State Library compound, so
one should park on Don Gaspar and walk to DeVargas. The song is easily heard.
Do not drive into the state parking area. CW and BT had it on April 8, BV
on April 15, on April 16, and JoO on April 17. The area is south of the
Supreme Court and north of the round capitol , the bird seen near a parking lot
wall.
JB had a BLUE JAY on West Zia Road in Santa Fe on April 16.
In Colfax County:
East of Maxwell on NM 193 and A7 DC found five MOUNTAIN PLOVERS and two
LONG-BILLED CURLEWS on April 10.
DC on April 3 at Stubblefield Lake saw the female LONG-TAILED DUCK still
present. On April 14 he reported that both females are still present with two
HORNED GREBES and a raft of about 250 FRANKLIN'S GULLS.
There was only one BARN OWL at the roost in the thicket near the 't' with
Hwys. A5 and A1 on April 4.
In Bernalillo County:
GP saw a LUCY'S WARBLER female on April 15 in trees at the Herb Garden on
the Rio Grande Nature Center in Albuquerque.
BV at the -Tramway Wetlands had two AVOCETS and LEAST SANDPIPERS on April 15.
In Valencia County:
JD had a singing NORTHERN PARULA in his Los Lunas yard on April 16 and 18
with five flyover DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS.
At the marsh behind the Taco Bell in Belen CW and BT on April 5 saw 40
BLACK-NECKED STILTS.
PB on April 11 had an OSPREY in the Rio Communaties area near Belen at a
large mobile home park and had a flock of over 50 CEDAR WAXWINGS.
In Torrance County:
BH on April 8 while checking on the Laguna del Perro saline ponds near
Willard found they have mostly dried up. He had four COMMON GRACKLES at the lake
in Estancia'S park and six SWAINSON'S HAWKS in the area.
In Roosevelt County:
CR on April 14-15 at the festival in Milnesand reported plenty of LESSER
PRAIRIE-CHICKENS. There were a few SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHERS in the area, a
NORTHERN PARULA was reported April 14, a flock of WESTERN BLUEBIRDS was in the
area and an EASTERN PHOEBE present since the 14th. DM had a WINTER WREN six
miles west of town and TM on April 13 had a SHORT-EARED OWL in the area. CR
had a MCCOWN'S LONGSPUR nine miles north (mile 55 on NM 206) and a mile east
and a BUSHTIT at Causey.
JN had two LONG-EARED OWLS still at the migrant rrap 11 miles west of
Melrose on April 16.
In Socorro County:
At Bosque del Apache Refuge near San Antonio MR, GS, and SF on April 7 saw
WILSON'S PHALAROPES. GP and CB on April 8 found a GLOSSY IBIS at the refuge
with FRANKLIN'S GULLS. CB also saw two WESTERN KINGBIRDS. JB saw the ibis on
April 9, but there have been no later reports. JP, WW, and LL at the
headquarter cactus garden on April 15 had singing WHITE-THROATED and FOX SPARROWS
plus four LONG-BILLED CURLEWS.

In Chaves County:
JH on Bitter Lake Refuge on April 12 reported SNOWY PLOVERS are arriving.
There were good numbers of EARED GREBES. On April 12 there was two first
winter BONAPARTE'S GULLS on Unit 3. On April 7 RW and group had a BURROWING OWL.
JH on April 18 reported a WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE on Unit 15, a late CANVASBACK
on Unit 16, two AMERICAN BITTERNS on Unit 16 and one on Unit 7, a late
FERRUGINOUS HAWK on Unit 5, a GOLDEN EAGLE on Unit 3, and the arrival of WILSON'S
PHALAROPES, LEAST and STILT SANDPIPERS. Burrowing Owls were on Unit 7. JH
on April 19 saw the White-fronted Goose still present, two WESTERN GREBES, a
BONAPARTE'S GULL, and FRANKLIN'S GULLS.
JP, WW, and LL had a good LESSER PRAIRIE CHICKEN show with 22 present on
March 17 north of the Waldrop Road Rest (40 miles east of Roswell) on the
Mescalero Sands. JSc in the afternoon saw 23 prancing on April 3 and the RW group
had them April 7 (also in the afternoon).
In Sierra County:
At the marsh at Las Palomas on April 7 CL saw a DOWNY WOODPECKER, CASSIN'S
VIREO, and a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW.
On Animas Creek near Caballo Lake JE on March 31 found two BRIDLED TITMICE.
JP, WW, and LL had a HOODED ORIOLE male in Hillsboro.
In Grant County:
JP, WW, and LL had two OLIVE WARBLERS in Upper Gallinas Canyon of the Black
Range on April 13.
RS, DMZ, and DB had a GRAY FLYCATCHER in Steeple Rock Canyon on April 4. RS
on April 17 had three in the canyon with one in Carlisle Canyon on April 16.
On Gold Gulch Road on Jack's Peak in the Burro Mts. on April 7 a ZONE-TAILED
HAWK, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES, and RED CROSSBILLS were seen on April 7.
JBi had more crossbills in the Pinos Altos Mts. at Sheep Corral Canyon on
April 8.
On San Vicente Creek in Silver City on April 8 DB had a MERLIN and a BRIDLED
TITMOUSE.
EW had a calling POORWILL near her home on the Gila River on April 3.
DMZ had a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW in their yard on April 3.
RoS had a MYRTLE WARBLER on April 14 at the Gila Bird Area near Cliff.
At the Cherry Creek Campground north of Pinos Altos CW and BT on April 8 had
an OLIVE WARBLER.
SB had a male SCOTT'S ORIOLE in Mimbres on April 14.
In Hidalgo County:
At Rodeo on April 14 JP, LL, and WW had a COMMON GROUND-DOVE and two INCA
DOVES.
DB reported at the Lordsburg sewage ponds on April 16 70
WHITE-FACED IBIS, four AVOCETS, three BLACK-NECKED STILTS, three CATTLE
EGRETS, and six BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS. On April 13 the JP crew saw a
PEREGRINE, a MARBLED GODWIT, and a SANDERLING.
JB on April 7 saw a ZONE-TAILED HAWK at Dunagan's Crossing. JP, LL, and WW
had a HARRIS'S HAWK present on April 13.
JB found signs of quite a flood in Guadalupe Canyon with debris in the trees
up to eight feet. He reported another ZONE-TAIL HAWK, at the ranch a GRAY
HAWK with a male COSTA'S HUMMINGBIRD seen. JP, LL, and WW April 14 had the
gray hawk and three BROAD-BILLED HUMMINGBIRDS with several GRAY FLYCATCHERS and
a HAMMOND'S FLYCATCHER.
In Clanton Canyon on April 14 JP, LL, and WW found a DUSKY-CAPPED
FLYCATCHER.
County Hwy. 1 south of Animas crosses the Diamond A (Gray) Ranch. Because
of events with thoughtless birders, one must not go off the road.
In Luna County:
LM reports that Katfish Kove is no longer open to birders.
In Doņa Ana County:
Prime birding spot is the Corralitos plays west of Las Cruces. It is to be
strongly emphasized that one must ask for permission at the ranch before
birding there. On April 13 CL and DG reported a MERLIN, four LONG-BILLED
CURLEWS, and a CASSIN'S SPARROW. JN on April 14 found the sparrows, a GREEN HERON,
and a MARBLED GODWIT. JZ and MS got the godwit later in the day with a
PEREGRINE FALCON on the entrance road. They also had the godwit April 15 and 16.
On the 16th there was a SNOWY PLOVER and a SOLITARY SANDPIPER.
At the Border Patrol playa on I-10 west of Las Cruces CL and DG found on
April 13 two CALIFORNIA GULLS. They were not seen again. JZ and MS had two
EARED GREBES and two AVOCETS on April 16.
JN on April 14 found an adult SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER in Mesilla Park at
the corner of University and NM 28. It was seen by JZ and MS later in the
day, and by CL on April 15. JN also saw an AMERICAN GOLDFINCH and two MYRTLE
WARBLERS at McDowell and Conway. CL had a CASSIN'S VIREO on April 15. On
April 17 JN at the arroyo on McDowell had a male BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER and the
vireo, but no flycatcher. CL had the warbler later in the day.
At the Tarahumara Polo Field DA on April 12 saw four WHIMBRELS and three
LONG-BILLED CURLEWS.
At the Mesilla Bosque Park JN on April 14 found two SORAS, SWAMP SPARROWS,
two fly-by NEOTROPIC CORMORANTS, and a MYRTLE WARBLER. DG on April 12 had a
BLACK HAWK.
DG had the OSPREY at Burn Lake on April 13.
DG in the area around Mesilla Dam on April 17 had a GREEN HERON, HOODED
ORIOLE, and a DUSKY FLYCATCHER.
JZ and MS had at their home near Radium Springs a NASHVILLE WARBLER on April
14 and a SCOTT'S ORIOLE on April 15.
CL on April 14 on the Pine Tree Trail at Aguirre Springs State Park had a
HUTTON'S VIREO and a TOWNSEND'S WARBLER. On April 15 he had a GRAY VIREO.
In Otero County:
RW on April 7 had over five pairs of SNOWY PLOVERS at the Holloman Lakes.
CL on April 18 found few shorebirds and high water levels. There was a
BONAPARTE'S GULL and two FRANKLIN'S GULLS.
At the Holloman Lakes near Alamogordo the "no access" signs are for hunters
only. The entire shore is open to birding. Due to vandalism the sightings
list and box have been removed.
In Eddy County:
At Avalon Lake near Carlsbad SW on April 12 saw a WHIMBREL and two AMERICAN
GOLDEN-PLOVERS.
SW found CLIFF and CAVE SWALLOWS at an apparent new nesting site on US 295
1.1 miles north of the road to Sitting Bull Falls under a culvert.

Central Audubon in Albuquerque has Thursday field trips. For details call

plans. On April 26 a hike in Otero Canyon is with Rebecca Gracey (242-3821).
The Bird Migration Sensation at Percha Dam State Park (which includes
Caballo and Elephant Butte Lakes) will be April 20-21.
There will be a birding breakfast, identification bird hikes. Contact is

On April 21 Southwestern Audubon will go down Separ Road for early migrants.
