Of Special Note



First of the year reports included AMERICAN BITTERN, BLACK-BELLIED
PLOVER, RUDDY TURNSTONE, LAUGHING GULL, NORTHERN GANNET, RUBY-THROATED
HUMMINGBIRD, GRAY CATBIRD, SCARLET TANAGER, and PALM WARBLER.



RING-NECKED DUCKS dominated the waterfowl reports. Also seen were
CANVASBACK and NORTHERN SHOVELERS in Scarborough plus an EURASIAN WIGEON
in Bowdoinham.



An ICELAND GULL was seen in Litchfield.



An adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL is being seen in Caribou.



York County



A male ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK stopped by a sunflower feeder in York on
April 16.



A GRAY CATBIRD arrived at a feeder in Cape Neddick on April 19.



A male ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK was at a suet feeder in Wells on April 20.



A BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER and 1 SNOW BUNTING. were seen at Biddeford Pool
on April 14 along with a mixed flock of RUDDY TURNSTONES and PURPLE
SANDPIPERS.



Also in Biddeford Pool, HORNED and RED-NECKED GREBES, a lone PIED-BILLED
GREBE, BRANT, a SHARP-SHINNED HAWK and a MERLIN were spotted from the
boat landing.



An AMERICAN BITTERN was seen off Route 9 near Goosefare Brook in Saco.



Scarborough Marsh Area



Birds at Grondin Pond off Black Point Road in Scarborough included 1 hen
CANVASBACK, 20 RING-NECKED DUCKS, 3 COMMON MERGANSERS, and 1 GADWALL.



A WILSON'S SNIPE was at Dunstan Landing.



GLOSSY IBIS were reported at several locations.



Birds in the marsh behind PELRICO on the Pine Point Road included a pair
of GADWALL, a ROUGH LEGGED HAWK, GREEN-WINGED TEAL, GREAT and SNOWY
EGRETS, a pair of NORTHERN HARRIERS, as well as 3 AMERICAN KESTRELS.



Greater Portland



CHIPPING SPARROWS arrived in Windham and a check of Collin's Pond found
7 WOOD DUCKS, 12 RING-NECKED DUCKS, and a PIED-BILLED GREBE.



A PALM WARBLER was foraging the edge of a small pond in Gray in company
with an EASTERN PHOEBE on April 18.



An AMERICAN BITTERN, NORTHERN PINTAILS, and an AMERICAN KESTREL were
seen at the Irving Thurston Wildlife Marsh in New Gloucester on April
14.



At nearby New Gloucester Marsh, there were 2 EASTERN PHOEBES, an
apparent pair of NORTHERN HARRIER, a pair of HOODED MERGANSER, and
KILLDEER.



The Bradbury Mountain Hawk Watch in Freeport tallied 63 hawks from April
13 through April 19 with 33 OSPREY, 1 BALD EAGLE, 5 NORTHERN HARRIERS,
18 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 2 RED-TAILED HAWKS, 2 AMERICAN KESTRELS, 1
MERLIN and 1 unidentified raptor.



Midcoast



FISH CROWS and a small flock of CEDAR WAXWINGS were seen at Hannaford's
in Brunswick on April 14.



A PINE WARBLER was eating hulled sunflower seeds at a feeder in Cundy's
Harbor on April 15.



A male SCARLET TANAGER was behind the Coastal Cancer Treatment Center in
Bath.



Twenty-five WILSON'S SNIPE were in a field on Ridge Road in North Bath
on April 20.



On April 18, at least 300+ DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS were in the river
between Bath and the mouth of the Kennebec River in Phippsburg with 2
rafts of WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS totaling about 100 at the mouth of the
river.



Elsewhere in Phippsburg, a pair of PIPING PLOVERS was on Seawall Beach,
17 SANDERLINGS were on Popham Beach, a RED-THROATED LOON, 3 RED-NECKED
GREBES, and two HORNED GREBES in breeding plumage were off Hermit
Island.



A first spring ICELAND GULL roosting with other gulls was seen from I-95
between mile marker 47 and 48 in Litchfield.



A drake EURASIAN WIGEON was found on April 18 with 6 AMERICAN WIGEON in
a flooded field on the lower end of Brown Point Road in Bowdoinham. The
EURASIAN WIGEON was relocated on the 19th but not found on the 20th.
Also present during the past 3 days were a pair of NORTHERN SHOVELERS, 1
BLUE WINGED TEAL, a WILSON'S SNIPE, a COOPERS HAWK, a PEREGRINE FALCON,
and an adult BALD EAGLE.



Forty-two SNOW GEESE, including 1 blue phase, and 3 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS,
18+ KILLDEER, a SEMI-PALMATED PLOVER, and 60+ HORNED LARKS. were seen in
Dresden along the Kennebec River.



LAUGHING GULLS were seen in several locations in Rockland on April 16.



A NORTHERN GANNET was seen from the Maine State Ferry in Rockport.



Lewiston-Auburn



Birds in Lewiston on April 14 included BROWN-HEADED COWBIRDS, a PINE
WARBLER, and a HOUSE WREN at Provencher's Landscape. PINE WARBLERS and
COMMON MERGANSERS were on the Switzerland Road, and 1 OSPREY was at
Stetson Brook on College Road.



Kennebec Valley



An immature NORTHERN SHRIKE and a MERLIN were seen on Dennis Hill in
Litchfield.



Ten species of ducks including 3 BLACK SCOTERS and 12 WOOD DUCKS were
seen from Thorofare Road on Pleasant Pond in Litchfield, along with a
BELTED KINGFISHER and EASTERN PHOEBE.



Birds in Magotty Meadow Marsh along route 197 in Litchfield included 4
NORTHERN PINTAILS, 3 OSPREY, and a WILSON'S SNIPE.



Birds along the Cobboseecontee Stream, Kennebec and Eastern Rivers on
April 14 included 6 species of ducks, an OSPREY, an AMERICAN KESTREL, 3
BALD EAGLES, and a NORTHERN SHRIKE.



Three EVENING GROSBEAKS were at a feeder in Unity on April 13.



A RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD arrived at a yard in Augusta on April 19.



Central Maine



RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRDS were reported in East Newport and Plymouth on
April 19.



An EASTERN KINGBIRD was on Kenduskeag Avenue in Bangor on April 20.



Penobscot Bay



SWAMP SPARROWS returned to Sedgewick around April 10, with four seen on
April 15, while 15-30 WILSON'S SNIPE were at Great Meadows off Route
172.



Downeast Coast



Ponds on Mt. Desert remain mostly frozen with the few open areas hosting
RING-NECKED DUCKS and COMMON and HOODED MERGANSERS.



Other birds on Mt. Desert included a TURKEY VULTURE, a MERLIN and
lingering PURPLE SANDPIPERS.



Western Mountains



WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS have arrived at feeders in Bethel.



A pair of WOOD DUCKS returned to the feeder in Wilton on April 15.



Aroostook County



An adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL first seen on April 16 continues
roosting with other gulls at Collins Pond in Caribou.



First of the year species reported in Aroostook County included a WOOD
DUCK on April 14 in Fort Fairfield, RING-NECKED DUCKS on April 11 in
Mars Hill, a drake BLACK SCOTER on April 18 also in Mars Hill, an OSPREY
at the nest site near Fish Stream in Island Falls on the April 18, a
light phase ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK in Fort Fairfield on April 18, a TREE
SWALLOW in Bancroft on April 20, and a FOX SPARROW on the University of
Maine campus in Presque Isle.



Six HORNED LARKS were seen feeding in the road in Fort Fairfield on
April 14 and a group of 4 was seen in Woodland on April 18.



Two hundred AMERICAN ROBINS were seen huddled along the foundations of
buildings on the UMPI campus in Presque Isle on April 16.



SNOW BUNTINGS were migrating with flocks as large as 350 reported from
Castle Hill, Caribou, Fort Fairfield, Presque Isle , Washburn and
Woodland.



A few EVENING GROSBEAKS continue to be seen in Chapman and Woodland.
