This is the Santa Barbara Audubon Society's rare bird report being recorded
on Friday, April 20 at 12:30 p.m. If you have a rare bird sighting to
report, call Karen Bridgers at 964-1316. For those of you who are getting
the transcript on the Internet, the rare bird alert number for Santa Barbara
is (805) 964-8240.
There are still amazing numbers of hummingbirds around, including an
unprecedented number of CALLIOPES. A male was in the bottlebrush that
borders the Evergreen Open Space in Goleta on Wednesday; a male was at UCSB
in the bottlebrush inside the courtyard at the Counseling and Career Center
on Tuesday; two males were in the acacia and eucalyptus thicket east of the
northernmost pullout at Devereux Slough on Sunday; at least three males were
in the bottlebrush along Merida Drive, which borders San Jose Creek, on the
14th.
A SWAINSON'S HAWK was seen on Monday on upper San Roque by the water
treatment plant.
Across from the reservoir on Farren Road in west Goleta, a GRASSHOPPER
SPARROW was seen on the 14th.
[A WANDERING TATTLER was seen today on the rocks off Campus Point at UCSB.]
At the Goleta Sewage Plant, the EURASIAN WIGEON was still there yesterday.
[The wigeon was still there today. A BLACK-HEADED GULL was found there
today and 17 YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDS were also seen there today. The
plant is not open on the weekends.]
Two ROSS'S GEESE remain in the pond at the Rancho Goleta Mobile Home Park at
the end of Ward Drive in Goleta.
[A RED-NECKED GREBE in breeding plumage was reported today from the area
between Stearn's Wharf and Sea Landing at the Santa Barbara harbor.]
Highlights of the Cachuma Lake boat trips last week included one adult BALD
EAGLE and a YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD.
In the North County, at Waller Park in Santa Maria, both the CACKLING GOOSE
and the ROSS'S GOOSE remain in the front pond.
The wintering WHITE-THROATED SPARROW was still in the southeast corner of
Old LaPurisima Mission Park on the south side of Lompoc, in the blackberry
bushes, on the 16th.
That is all the bird news for now, but, again, if you have a rare sighting
to report, call Karen Bridgers at 964-1316. Good birding in Santa Barbara
County.
