This is the birding hotline report of the Madison Audubon Society for
Wednesday, April 18th.
On Monday, the 16th, a LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH was reported in Baxter's
Hollow in Sauk County.
Earlier, an observer called in a female SMITH'S LONGSPUR seen near
Waunakee near the corner of Schumacher Road and Cuba Valley Road.
There have been no follow-up reports.
From University Bay, we have a report of a HERRING GULL X GLAUCOUS GULL cross.
Birders at the Biocore Prairie flushed a SHORT-EARED OWL.
Both a HENSLOW'S SPARROW and a SHORT-EARED OWL were found in an
unnamed western Dane County Prairie, possibly Thompson Prairie (aka
Thousand's Rock) where both species have been seen in past years.
Pheasant Branch Conservancy off Park Lawn has recently produced WINTER
and CAROLINA WRENS, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, and PURPLE FINCHES. The
County Branch of Pheasant Branch has been good for sparrows.
Although most of the migrating waterfowl have left the area, there
remains a good number at 9 Springs, Lower Mud Lake, and Lake Barney.
About a hundred BONAPARTE'S GULLS were spotted at Lake Barney.
Seventy-six SANDHILL CRANES were at Island Lake.
Good Birding!
