In Sandoval County:
CR and SD did the north end of the Corrales Bosque on April 22 and found a
sometimes singing YELLOW-THROATED VIREO. Hike down the levee road to past the
stables, and take the trail into the woods. Also found were a GRAY
FLYCATCHER and up to seven MYRTLE WARBLERS.
MD saw his first BLACK-CHINNED HUMMINGBIRD in Corrales on April 21.
In Taos County:
SH had his first BROAD-TAILED HUMMINGBIRD in Taos on April 16.
In Santa Fe County:
BW on March 29-30 had a singing CAROLINA WREN in Santa Fe in a closed area
for parking at the State Library compound, so one should park on Don Gaspar
and walk to DeVargas. The song is easily heard. Do not drive into the state
parking area. BV found it on April 15, JoO on April 17, and JB on April 21.
The area is south of the Supreme Court and north of the round capitol, the
bird is seen near a parking lot wall.
JB on April 22 at the abandoned village of White Lakes south of Santa Fe On
White Lakes Road had a MOUNTAIN PLOVER with a FERRUGINOUS HAWK going east on
24C.
JB had a BLUE JAY on West Zia Road in Santa Fe on April 16. And he had an
OSPREY fly over the state library on April 21.
In San Miguel County:
JA had six LONG-BILLED CURLEWS near her home on the edge of the Las Vegas
Refuge on April 16 on the loop road.
She reports that CaB has had large flocks of EVENING GROSBEAKS at her home
in Montezuma for a month.
In Colfax County:
East of Maxwell on NM 193 and A7 DC found five MOUNTAIN PLOVERS and two
LONG-BILLED CURLEWS on April 10.
DC on April 20 at Stubblefield Lake saw the female LONG-TAILED DUCK still
present. On April 14 he reported two HORNED GREBES and a raft of about 250
FRANKLIN'S GULLS.
There was only one BARN OWL at the roost in the thicket near the 't' with
Hwys. A5 and A1 on April 4.
In Bernalillo County:
JK heard two calling FLAMMULATED OWLS on April 19 at Capulin Springs Picnic
Area in the Sandia Mts. east of Albuquerque. HS reported about eight GRACE'S
WARBLERS had returned to Armijo Canyon in the Sandias on April 19.
GP saw a LUCY'S WARBLER female on April 15 in trees at the Herb Garden on
the Rio Grande Nature Center in Albuquerque.
BV at the -Tramway Wetlands had two AVOCETS on April 15.
In Valencia County:
JD had a singing NORTHERN PARULA in his Los Lunas yard on April 16 and 18.
At the marsh behind the Taco Bell in Belen CW and BT on April 5 saw 40
BLACK-NECKED STILTS.
In Torrance County:
BH on April 8 while checking on the Laguna del Perro saline ponds near
Willard found they have mostly dried. He had four COMMON GRACKLES at the park
lake in Estancia.
On April 18 JK had a COMMON GRACKLE at the rest stop on NM 285 near Encino.
In Roosevelt County:
CR on April 14-15 at the festival in Milnesand reported plenty of LESSER
PRAIRIE-CHICKENS. There were a few SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHERS and a flock of
WESTERN BLUEBIRDS in the area and an EASTERN PHOEBE present since the 14th. DM
had a WINTER WREN six miles west of town and TM on April 13 had a
SHORT-EARED OWL in the area.
JS had two LONG-EARED OWLS still at the migrant trap 11 miles west of
Melrose on April 16.
In Socorro County:
At Bosque del Apache Refuge near San Antonio GP and CB on April 8 found a
GLOSSY IBIS at the refuge. JB saw the ibis on April 9, and the MLA group saw
it at the southern end on April 19 with an AMERICAN BITTERN near the Coyote
Deck. JP at the headquarters on April 21 had two WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS plus
a SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER on the Marsh Loop. JP on April 20 had 19 WILLETS ot
the Flight Deck and a fly-by calling flock of five SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS.
In Chaves County:
JH on Bitter Lake Refuge reported good numbers of EARED GREBES. Onn April
18 he had a WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE on Unit 15, a late CANVASBACK on Unit 16, two
AMERICAN BITTERNS on Unit 16 and one on Unit 7, a late FERRUGINOUS HAWK on
Unit 5, and the arrival of STILT SANDPIPERS. BURROWING OWLS were on Unit 7.
JH on April 19 saw the White-fronted Goose still present, two WESTERN GREBES,
three BONAPARTE'S GULLS, and FRANKLIN'S GULLS. On April 20 he had a
NASHVILLE WARBLER at headquarters, two WILLETS on Unit 5 and two on Unit 6, and ten
on Unit 7. Also there were four CATTLE EGRETS on Unit 6, a PEREGRINE on Unit
16 with many shorebirds being seen.
JP, WW, and LL had a good LESSER PRAIRIE CHICKEN show with 22 present on
March 17 north of the Waldrop Road Rest (40 miles east of Roswell) on the
Mescalero Sands. JSc in the afternoon saw 23 prancing on April 3 and the RW group
had them April 7 (also in the afternoon).
In Catron County:
JHa on her ranch near Datil on April 19 had her first GRACE'S WARBLER with a
singing DUSKY FLYCATCHER on April 22,=
In Sierra County:
At Percha Dam SP on April 21 JP has a NASHVILLE WARBLER at the south end of
the woods south of the fence, a singing BELL'S VIREO, a MERLIN, about five
WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS, and
a CASSIN'S VIREO.
At North Monticello Point of Elephant Butte Lake on April 21 JP found two
LONG-BILLED CURLEWS and a CALIFORNIA GULL.
On Animas Creek near Caballo Lake JE on March 31 found two BRIDLED TITMICE.
In Grant County:
JP, WW, and LL had two OLIVE WARBLERS in Upper Gallinas Canyon of the Black
Range on April 13.
RS, DMZ, and DB had a GRAY FLYCATCHER in Steeple Rock Canyon on April 4. RS
on April 17 had three in the canyon with one in Carlisle Canyon on April 16.
On Gold Gulch Road on Jack's Peak in the Burro Mts. on April 7 a ZONE-TAILED
HAWK, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES, and RED CROSSBILLS were seen.
JBi had more crossbills in the Pinos Altos Mts. at Sheep Corral Canyon on
April 8.
On San Vicente Creek in Silver City on April 8 DB had a MERLIN and a BRIDLED
TITMOUSE.
DMZ had a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW in their yard on April 3.
RoS had a MYRTLE WARBLER on April 14 at the Gila Bird Area near Cliff.
At the Cherry Creek Campground north of Pinos Altos CW and BT on April 8 had
an OLIVE WARBLER.
In Hidalgo County:
At Rodeo on April 14 JP, LL, and WW had a COMMON GROUND-DOVE and two INCA
DOVES.
DB reported at the Lordsburg sewage ponds on April 16 70
WHITE-FACED IBIS, four AVOCETS, three BLACK-NECKED STILTS, three CATTLE
EGRETS, and six BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS. On April 13 the JP crew saw a
PEREGRINE, a MARBLED GODWIT, and a SANDERLING.
At Dunagan's Crossing south of Animas JP, LL, and WW had a HARRIS'S HAWK
present on April 13.
JB in Guadalupe Canyon had a ZONE-TAIL HAWK, at the ranch a GRAY HAWK with
a male COSTA'S HUMMINGBIRD seen. JP, LL, and WW April 14 had the gray hawk
and three BROAD-BILLED HUMMINGBIRDS with several GRAY FLYCATCHERS and a
HAMMOND'S FLYCATCHER.
In Clanton Canyon on April 14 JP, LL, and WW found a DUSKY-CAPPED
FLYCATCHER.
County Hwy. 1 south of Animas crosses the Diamond A (Gray) Ranch. Because
of events with thoughtless birders, one must not go off the road.
In Luna County:
LM reports that Katfish Kove is no longer open to birders.
In Doņa Ana County:
JZ and MS on April 22 had a male PALM WARBLER on the east side of the Rio
Grande near Rincon on the levee.
Prime birding spot is the Corralitos plays west of Las Cruces. It is to be
strongly emphasized that one must ask for permission at the ranch before
birding there. JN on April 14 found the CASSIN'S SPARROWS and a MARBLED GODWIT.
JZ and MS got the godwit later in the day with a PEREGRINE FALCON on the
entrance road. They also had the godwit April 15 and 16. On the 16th there
was a SNOWY PLOVER and a SOLITARY SANDPIPER.
CL on April 20 at Randal's Pool near the Sunland Racetrack had a NASHVILLE
WARBLER with 300 CATTLE EGRETS and 1000 dark ibis in fields near Anthony.
DG on April 20 at the Dripping Springs east of Las Cruces had a singing male
HUTTON'S VIREO, a male TOWNSEND'S WARBLER, and a male BLACK-THROATED GRAY
WARBLER, and wild flowers.
At the Border Patrol playa on I-10 west of Las Cruces JZ and MS had two
EARED GREBES and two AVOCETS on April 16.
JN on April 14 found an adult SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER in Mesilla Park at
the corner of University and NM 28. It was seen by JZ and MS later in the
day, and by CL on April 15. JN also saw an AMERICAN GOLDFINCH and two MYRTLE
WARBLERS at McDowell and Conway. CL had a CASSIN'S VIREO on April 15. On
April 17 JN at the arroyo on McDowell had a male BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER and the
vireo, but no flycatcher. CL had the warbler later in the day.
At the Mesilla Valley Bosque Park JN on April 14 found two SORAS, SWAMP
SPARROWS, and a MYRTLE WARBLER. DG on April 12 had a BLACK HAWK. CBr on April
21 had a HOUSE WREN, a possible WINTER WREN heard, and the AMERICAN BITTERN
was still present.
DG in the area around Mesilla Dam on April 17 had a GREEN HERON, HOODED
ORIOLE, and a DUSKY FLYCATCHER.
JZ and MS had at their home near Radium Springs a NASHVILLE WARBLER on April
14 and a SCOTT'S ORIOLE on April 15. MS at the Rio levee there saw a
circling BROAD-WINGED HAWK.
CL on April 14 on the Pine Tree Trail at Aguirre Springs State Park had a
HUTTON'S VIREO and a TOWNSEND'S WARBLER. On April 15 he had a GRAY VIREO.
In Otero County:
At the Holloman Lakes CL on April 18 found few shorebirds and high water
levels. There was a BONAPARTE'S GULL and two FRANKLIN'S GULLS.
At the Holloman Lakes near Alamogordo the "no access" signs are for hunters
only. The entire shore is open to birding. Due to vandalism the sightings
list and box have been removed.
In Eddy County:
At Avalon Lake near Carlsbad SW on April 12 saw a WHIMBREL and two AMERICAN
GOLDEN-PLOVERS.
SHa had an OSPREY on April 18 in Carlsbad on Hwy. 62 near the Pecos River.
JK reported a BROWN THRASHER at Rattlesnake Springs south of Carlsbad on
April 18.
SW found CLIFF and CAVE SWALLOWS at an apparent new nesting site on US 295
1.1 miles north of the road to Sitting Bull Falls under a culvert.

is their Birdathon with a contribution; May 24 is to Socorro with Rebecca
Gracey at 242-3821; May 31 to Villanueva State Park on the Pecos Rio with the
Boettchers at 281-6726.
On Saturday, April 29 Central Audubon will go to Bitter Lake Refuge.

Saturday May 5 is the annual NMOS Meeting in Carlsbad at the Washington
Ranch south of Carlsbad Caverns. The evening speaker will be Steve West on Cave
Swallows. He will hold banding demonstrations on May 3, 4, and 6. For
