Welcome to the City of Calgary and CFNS Bird Alert. This Bird Alert was
recorded on Monday April 23 at 10:40am. To report a bird sighting, call

An EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE was found in Calgary's Deer Run subdivision on
April 15. The observer saw the bird in an apple tree in her back yard.
Although present in many towns and cities in Alberta, this dove has not been
documented in Calgary before.

BLACK-NECKED STILTS were widely reported in southern Alberta over the
weekend. Lois and Bill Lang saw 18 birds on April 20 along Hwy 23 just north
of Frank Lake. On April 21 David Brown reported 4 stilts were at Goose
Lagoon at 36 Street and 80 Avenue NE in Calgary. The following day Terry
Korolyk saw 10 stilts just east of Shepard along Twp Rd 232, and Ray Woods
spotted another 3 at Glenmore Reservoir. On April 22 Joan and Malcolm
McDonald observed Black-necked Stilts in the Bassano area and another near
Lake Newell.


The McDonalds also found 15 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS near Kinbrook Island
south of Brooks, plus RUBY-THROATED KINGLETS, COMMON GRACKLES, 2 CASPIAN
TERNS and a TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE. They saw 3 more solitaires at the large
teepee rest stop on Hwy 1 in eastern Alberta. Phil Cram watched a LINCOLN'S
SPARROW in his yard in Calgary Mount Royal on April 22; the same day the
Langs saw a MOURNING DOVE at the Irricana Sloughs and Lenora and Dick Flynn
noted a male COMMON GRACKLE in their yard in Calgary Maple Ridge. Other
species seen recently include WESTERN GREBE, BARN SWALLOW, BONAPARTE'S GULL
and MARBLED GODWIT.

Ray Woods observed a LONG-TAILED DUCK and 5 RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS at
Glenmore Reservoir April 22. Andrew Slater found a male Red-breasted at the
Carseland Weir and TK saw a female on Chestermere Lake on the same day. TK
also noted 21 GREATER SCAUP on Lake McDonald by the 2 tall smokestacks on 52
Street NE off Hwy 564. Frank Chappell found 30-50 GRAY-CROWNED ROSY-FINCHES
along Twp Rd 252 just west of Hwy 22 on April 21.
