WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS

This is the Western Voice of Audubon for Monday April 23, 2007

Warm weather has brought many new migrants to the region in the last
few days, and today there was a big daytime movement of hawks.

At Ashley Ponds in Holyoke there was a PIED-BILLED GREBE, 2 BLUE-
HEADED VIREOS, a HERMIT THRUSH, 2 WINTER WRENS, a
BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER, and a RUSTY BLACKBIRD.

Seen in Hadley were 48 WOOD DUCKS, 3 AMERICAN WIGEONS, 30
GREEN-WINGED TEAL, a PIED-BILLED GREBE, 7 GREATER
YELLOWLEGS, a LEAST SANDPIPER, 27 WILSON’S SNIPE, 2
EASTERN SCREECH OWLS, an AMERICAN PIPIT, and a VESPER SPARROW.

Noted migrating this morning over Mt. Tom were 609 BROAD -WINGED
HAWKS, and a MERLIN, and over Mt. Holyoke 493 BROAD-WINGED
HAWKS. Also seen on Mt. Tom were a CHIMNEY SWIFT, and a
BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER.

A GREAT EGRET was in Amherst, 2 BLUE-WINGED TEAL, 4
AMERICAN WIGEONS and 2 BLACK VULTURES in Easthampton, 2
AMERICAN WIGEONS in Granby, a BARRED OWL, a BLUE-
HEADED VIREO, 4 BARN SWALLOWS, and 5 HERMIT THRUSH in
Belchertown, and a VESPER SPARROW and a RUSTY BLACKBIRD in
Northfield.

In Granville there were 2 BLACK VULTURES, a mixed flock of 30
BLACK SCOTERS and WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS, a BLUE-
HEADED VIREO, a BARN SWALLOW and a WINTER WREN.

A CHIMNEY SWIFT and a WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW were in
Williamstown, 25 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS and 85 BROAD-WINGED
HAWKS were counted over Russell on Sunday, a CHIMNEY SWIFT was
seen in Pittsfield, and a BROWN THRASHER in Southwick.

Counted migrating during the week at Barre Falls were 60 OSPREYS, 6
NORTHERN HARRIERS, 70 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 8 COOPER’S
HAWKS, 237 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, 29 AMERICAN KESTRELS,
a MERLIN and a PEREGRINE FALCON.
