This is the Sunday, April 29, 2007 Missouri Rare Bird
Alert, a statewide service of the Audubon Society of
Missouri, serving the birding community of Missouri
since 1901. The bird alert is compiled from reports
submitted by ASM members and other birders throughout
the state.

** NOTE: The report includes birds that are listed as
rare, casual, or accidental on the 2003 Annotated
Checklist of Missouri Birds (with revisions in 2004
and 2005). Species that appear in ALL CAPS in the
“Species Mentioned” section are listed as “casual” or
“accidental” and thus require documentation. (Note
that some birds may be considered rare only during a
particular season or in a particular part of the

ST. LOUIS AREA

At Riverlands MBS (St. Charles Co.) on Sunday, April
29, Ken Thompson reported 3 AMERICAN AVOCETS were
present.

At Columbia Bottoms CA (St. Louis Co.) on Saturday,
April 28, one WILLET was observed by Dave Rogles and
Tom Borman from the new gravel road. The bird was
still present on Sunday, April 29, when observed by
Bill and Matt Rowe. Additionally, Bill and Matt
observed a male GREAT-TAILED GRACKLE singing from the
tree line along the new road.


COLUMBIA/CENTRAL

Edge Wade reported two PEREGRINE FALCONS present at
Eagle Bluffs CA (Boone Co.) on Sunday, April 22.

On Saturday, April 14, Joe Eades found a single
YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD at Eagle Bluffs CA. Later the
same day, Jean Leonatti found not 1, but 2
YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDS. However, Jonathan Pons
reported as many as 9 YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDS were
present on Saturday, April 28, just before the first
one way loop.


KANSAS CITY AREA

Doug Willis observed 2 YELLOW-THROATED WARBLERS at
Weston Bend SP (Clay Co.) on Thursday, April 26. On
Friday, April 27, at Wallace SP (Clinton Co.), Doug
observed 2 more YELLOW-THROATED WARBLERS; a species
listed as rare north of the Missouri River.

NORTHWEST

Steve Kinder reported on Monday, April 23, that as
many as 13 male and 2 female GREATER PRAIRIE CHICKENS
are coming to the lek at the Nature Conservancy’s Dunn
Ranch (Harrison Co.). Birders interested in viewing
these birds need to contact Doug at 314.968.1105 or
call the St. Joseph MDC office at 816.271.3107 to make
arrangements.

On Saturday, April 21, Dave Rogles and Tom Borman
observed the BLACK-NECKED STILT, first reported by
Tommie Rogers on Saturday, April 14, at Squaw Creek
NWR (Holt Co.). The bird was near the road just past
the beginning of the one way loop. Tommie Rogers
reported on Monday, April 23, that an AMERICAN AVOCET,
10 MARBLED GODWITS, and SANDERLING were present at
Squaw Creek NWR. Additionally, Peter Kondrashov
observed a single SANDHILL CRANE on Monday, in Snow
Goose Pool D. Larry Lade observed a PEREGRINE FALCON
take flight out of Mallard Marsh on Wednesday, April
25. On Sunday, April 29, Joe Eades found 2 SNOWY
PLOVERS in Snow Goose Pool C, almost adjacent to the
turnoff into Mallard Marsh. Tommie Rogers reported
the birds were still present as of 6PM on April 29.

On Sunday, April 29, Kristi Mayo found a soaring adult
SANDHILL CRANE at Cooley Lake (Clay Co.). The bird
then landed on the west side of the main north pool.
