The following is a summary of the Georgia Rare Bird Alert (RBA) Sunday
night telephone report, April 29, 2007. The RBA is a service of the
Georgia Ornithological Society. Jeff Sewell is the voice of the RBA.


A SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER was seen on April 28th on Jekyll Island in Glynn
Co. The bird was seen on the telephone wires near the Convention Center,
and moved north along the beach as far north as the beach resort. GRAY
KINGBIRDS are also being seen around the Convention Center.

A male VERMILLION FLYCATCHER was reported coming to a feeder in Davisboro in
Washington Co. on April 26th. For more information on this sighting, call

A YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD was seen on April 28th by several birders at the
E.L. Huie Land Application Facility, near the middle west and the northwest
ponds. The last reported Yellow-headed Blackbird from ELHLAF is from about
10 years ago. ELHAF is located off of Dixon Industrial Blvd. in Clayton Co.

A ROSS'S GOOSE was seen in Macon in Bibb Co. on April 26th at the end of
Lower Poplar St. near the water treatment plant.

BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING DUCKS are still being reported from the Altamaha
Waterfowl Management Area in McIntosh Co. this week, and indeed may have
bred there. They were last seen on Saturday, April 28th. The ducks have
been seen on both sides of US17. Also seen there were 7 MOTTLED DUCKS, a
few BLUE-WINGED TEAL, a few NORTHERN SHOVELERS and 25 GLOSSY IBIS. AMERICAN
BITTERN, LEAST BITTERN have been seen on both sides of US17, and MERLIN,
VIRGINIA RAIL, and KING RAIL have been seen on the west side of US17 all the
way beyond I-95. Directions: Follow US17 south out of Darien, crossing two
bridges over the Altamaha River. The impoundment ponds and observation
tower are on the left or east side of US17. Additional directions can be

An AMERICAN BITTERN continues at the Phinizy Swamp near Augusta. It was
last seen on April 28th. A CASPIAN TERN was seen in Augusta on April 27th.

Four MISSISSIPPI KITES and 45 BLUE GROSBEAKS were reported from the Oxbow
Meadows Environmental Center in Muscogee Co. on April 27th.

Twenty-four species of Warblers were seen on Sunday April 29th. at the
Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park in Cobb Co. Included were 18
BLACKBURNIAN WARBLERS, 10 CERULIAN WARBLERS, 24 BLACK-THROATED GREEN
WARBLERS, and 7 CANADA WARBLERS, with good numbers of SCARLET and SUMMER
TANAGERS, and ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS. This is only the 17th Spring day in
16 years with 24 species of warblers, a peak day, maybe =the= peak day this
spring.

A NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, a LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH, and a SWAINSON'S WARBLER
were reported from the Clyde Shepherd Nature Preserve in Dekalb Co. on
April 28th. Directions: From the I-285/Stone Mountain Freeway (US78)
intersection, proceed south on US78 toward Atlanta. Stay in your right
lane. Just past the QuickTrip on the right is Harrington Drive. Turn right
on Harrington, and in about a mile take a right on Wood Trail Ln. This road
dead ends into the CSNP, previously known as the South Peachtree Creek
Nature Preserve. Park, and take the trail on the left to the boardwalk.

Among the 82 species reported from the Standing Boy Wildlife Management Area
in Muscogee Co. on April 28th were 23 species of Warblers, including 26
KENTUCKY WARBLERS, a possible new state high count. This is from one
individual in one location - quite remarkable! Directions: Delorme 40:B-1.
Traveling north from Columbus on GA219 (River Rd.), turn left on Old River
Rd. (this is the road bisected by the 'd' in the words 'Standing Boy Creek'
in Delorme. The WMA will be on the left.

Among the 51 species seen at Murphy-Candler Park on April 28th were 13
species of Warblers. There have been several good reports this week from
this park, located off of Ashford-Dunwoody road, south of I-285, in Dekalb
Co.
