The following is a summary of the Georgia Rare Bird Alert (RBA) Sunday
night telephone report, April 30, 2007. The RBA is a service of the
Georgia Ornithological Society. Jeff Sewell is the voice of the RBA.
At the E.L. Huie Land Application Facility, the YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD seen
on April 28th by several birders was still there today, near the middle west
and the northwest ponds. The last reported Yellow-headed Blackbird from
ELHLAF is from about 10 years ago. ELHLAF is located off of Dixon
Industrial Blvd. in Clayton Co. Directions: From the US41/Tara Blvd.
intersection with Freeman Rd., proceed east on Freeman Rd.. Take your first
left, which is Dixon Industrial Blvd. The entrance to the ponds is about
200 yds. on the left, through a gate in the chain-link fence. The middle
west pond is the one on the other side of the pumphouse pond.

A SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER was seen on April 28th on Jekyll Island in Glynn
Co. The bird was seen on the telephone wires near the Convention Center,
and moved north along the beach as far north as the beach resort. GRAY
KINGBIRDS are also being seen around the Convention Center.

A male SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER has also been reported from the King Mill
Rd. location in McDonough in Henry Co. This is at least the sixth year that
this bird has returned to this location. Directions: From the GA155
McDonough exit on I-75 (Exit 216), go east on GA155 to the first light,
which will be
King's Mill Rd. and the entrance to the King's Mill Industrial Park. Take
King's Mill Rd. all the way through the office park to it's end at GA42.
Turn left, go about 1/4 mile, and turn right on King Mill Rd. The bird has
been nesting on the Power Line pylons on your left at the power line cut
just a little bit down the road.

Nineteen species of Warblers were seen today, Monday, April 30th, and 24
species of Warblers were seen on Sunday April 29th. at the
Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park in Cobb Co. Included on Sunday
were 18 BLACKBURNIAN WARBLERS, 10 CERULIAN WARBLERS, 24 BLACK-THROATED GREEN
WARBLERS, and 7 CANADA WARBLERS, with good numbers of SCARLET and SUMMER
TANAGERS, and ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS. An OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER was also
seen Monday in the first clear area above the saddle, in an area known as
the snag area.
A NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, a LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH, and a SWAINSON'S WARBLER
were reported from the Clyde Shepherd Nature Preserve in Dekalb Co. on
April 28th. Birds seen there recently include MARSH & SEDGE WRENS,
BLUE-WINGED WARBLER, LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH, BALTIMORE ORIOLE, SCARLET
TANAGER, EASTERN KINGBIRD, INDIGO BUNTING, and BLUE GROSBEAK. Directions:
From the I-285/Stone Mountain Freeway (US78) intersection, proceed south on
US78 toward Atlanta. Stay in your right lane. Just past the QuickTrip on
the right is Harrington Drive. Turn right on Harrington, and in about a
mile take a right on Wood Trail Ln. This road dead ends into the CSNP,
previously known as the South Peachtree Creek Nature Preserve. Park, and
take the trail on the left to the boardwalk.

BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING DUCKS are still being reported from the Altamaha
Waterfowl Management Area in McIntosh Co. this week, and indeed may have
bred there last year. They were last seen on Saturday, April 28th. The
ducks have been seen on both sides of US17. Also seen there were 7 MOTTLED
DUCKS, a few BLUE-WINGED TEAL, a few NORTHERN SHOVELERS and 25 GLOSSY IBIS.
AMERICAN BITTERN, LEAST BITTERN have been seen on both sides of US17, and
MERLIN, VIRGINIA RAIL, and KING RAIL have been seen on the west side of US17
all the way beyond I-95. Directions: Follow US17 south out of Darien,
crossing two bridges over the Altamaha River. The impoundment ponds and
observation tower are on the left or east side of US17. Additional
directions can be found in the GABO archives or in Giff Beaton's Birding
Georgia.

A ROSS'S GOOSE was seen in Macon in Bibb Co. on April 26th at the end of
Lower Poplar St. near the water treatment plant.
