A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen near the Browning-Ferris Landfill on 194
Ave in southeast Calgary on Sun, Apr 29. The bird was seen by Terry Korolyk
in the early evening; it was resting with other large gulls just north of
194 Ave on the site of the Blue Devil Golf Course which is being constructed
there. This is the 4th report of the species within Calgary city limits
this spring.
A total of 8 HUDSONIAN GODWITS were seen east of Calgary on Sun, Apr 29. The
birds were seen by Chris and Ken Havard; they were on 2 small ponds on the
west side of Rge Rd 265 approximately a mile north of Twp Rd 260.
BLACK-NECKED STILTS reported over the weekend included 10 birds seen by
Terry Korolyk in the northwest corner of Lake Silver on the east side of Hwy
2 just north of Nanton on Sun, Apr 29, and 2 birds seen Apr 24 by Andrew
Slater east of the tracks on Twp Rd 232 just east of Shepherd. WILLETS were
reported in our area by several observers on Sun Apr 29 and Mary Huston and
Lucille Harrison noted a LONG-BILLED CURLEW on Fri, Apr 20 along Hwy 9
approximately ¼ mile east of the Twp Rd 270-Rge Rd 264 junction.
Andrew Slater reported a HOUSE WREN at Brown-Lowery PP on Fri Apr 27, and
Romana Windsteig watched a SAY’S PHOEBE near the old heronry in east Fish
Creek PP on Sat Apr 28. SAVANNA SPARROWS, WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS,
YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, and CLIFF SWALLOWS were all reported in the Calgary
area over the weekend.
Marcel Gahbauer reported a NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL calling in the east end of
Lowery Gardens below Edworthy Park on the evening of Wed Apr 25 and Andrew
Slater reported a NORTHERN PYGMY-OWL was at Brown-Lowery Apr 27. Andy Hill
in the Marda Loop area reported that the WHITE-THROATED SPARROW that
overwintered in his neighbourhood was still there over the weekend.
Late-player winter visitors included 3 COMMON REDPOLLS in Calgary Southview
reported by Carol Coulter on Sun Apr 29, and a NORTHERN SHRIKE seen east of
Calgary by Ken and Chris Havard, also on Sun Apr. 29.
The next scheduled update of the Bird Alert is on Thursday May 3.

Bird Study Group meets 1st Wednesday of the month, Room 211, BioSciences
Bldg, U of C except June through August when field trips replace the
meetings. On May 2, Gus Yaki will be presenting “My Wild America Trip: In

pp.19-23). Meet Anderson LRT (Macleod Tr), S of pedestrian overpass for car
pooling. Call 243-2248 to register and more info. Four motels in Taber if
wanting to stay overnight. Leader, Lloyd Bennett, Taber, 403-223-0456,
lloydaben@hotmail.com. Directions: from Taber, go east on highway #3 for 4
miles. Turn north at the big green Agricore building for 3 1/2 miles (go
exactly 1/2 mile past the 2nd intersection). Lloyd’s house is on the east
side, over 200 m from the road, with a round slough on the west side of the
road. His place has a blue sign with the address - 104043, Range Road 160.
Meet by 10am.
