Welcome to Pennsylvania Audubon's and the Patriot-News' Birdline. This
Birdline covers sightings made primarily during the week prior to
Wednesday, April 25, 2007.
NOTE: I am in the midst of attending two out of town back-to-back
conferences. I do not have the time to produce full compilations for
this and the next birdline. I will post what I can quickly compile as
weekly rarities for this birdline and weekly rarities for the following
birdline on Wednesday, May 2.
CENTER COUNTY:
An AMERICAN BITTERN was found at Scotia Pond between April 20 and 22
(AW, JV).
There were 5 VIRGINIA RAILS at the Julian wetlands on April 22 (AW).
CLINTON COUNTY:
A BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERON was found along the Susquehanna River near
McElhatten on April 18 (NS, VS, BZ). A PEREGRINE FALCON was also seen
across the Susquehanna River from the McElhatten farm fields on April 18
(NS, VS, BZ).
A flock of 9 SANDHILL CRANES flew over the Laubscher farm on April 20
(WL).
An AMERICAN BITTERN was found at a Williamsport property on April 23
(DF).
CUMBERLAND COUNTY:
State Game Lands 169 yielded 1 AMERICAN BITTERN, 1 MERLIN and 7 WILSON'S
SNIPE on April 21 (VG, BF).
The area between Newburg and Newville produced AMERICAN BITTERN,
BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERON and VIRGINIA RAIL on April 21 (AM).
A COMMON MOORHEN was observed on April 22 along the Conodiguinet Creek
about 0.5 miles upstream from its confluence with the Susquehanna River
at West Fairview (RK).
JUNIATA COUNTY:
An AMERICAN BITTERN was found along Mountain Road behind
McAlisterville/Oakland Mills between April 20 and 21 (CK, AT, DT, DW).
LANCASTER COUNTY:
A EUROPEAN GOLDFINCH was observed at the Odell's feeder on April 20
(AO). It is a likely escapee.
There were 2 LITTLE GULLS in a flock of around 75 BONAPARTE'S GULLS
along the Conoy Canal Trail between Falmouth and Bainbridge on April 20
(DH).
Conejohela Flats yielded 1 AMERICAN BITTERN, 1 BALD EAGLE and 2 WILSON'S
SNIPE on April 23 (BS, TA).
YORK COUNTY:
There were nesting GREAT EGRETS, BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERONS and 1
YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT HERON at Kiwanis Lake between April 19 and 20 (BM,
AMS, DC).
Gifford Pinchot State Park produced 1 AMERICAN BITTERN between April 20
and 24 (PS, DC, BM).
