Alabama Rare Bird Report – Wednesday, April 25, 2007.
The spring AOS meeting on Dauphin Island last weekend was very successful. Around 217 total species were reported at compilation with 203 of these within the city limits! This is several dozen more than last year’s winning “Birdiest Small Coastal City” contest total.
Noteworthy finds were: YELLOW RAIL (airport marsh); BLACK RAIL (location unknown);
and four MARBLED GODWITS, BAIRD’S SANDPIPER, and RED KNOTS (tidal pool at the West End near Varga and Pelican Island off the D.I. fishing pier).
A young GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen 4/24 on a sandbar in Aloe Bay from AL193.
[DeAL 64-B3&4][BGtA p. 6-12]
Up to 200+ WHIMBREL have been seen in recent days in farm fields south of Grand Bay in Mobile County. From AL 188 in town, turn south on Henderson Camp Road and scan the fields along the road about 2-3 miles in. On 4/18 the largest groups were about three miles down on the left. One AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER was also seen. [DeAL 62-G1]
A 1st year LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen 4/22 on Mobile Point south of Ft. Morgan. [DeAL 64-B4][BGtA p. 23]
